Is Manchester City’s success just a reflection of their bank account?

The 19/20 Premier League season resulted in a domestic treble in for Pep and Manchester, including a second successive top-flight league title. Is it all just because they have the only squad valued at over $1 billion in the entire world, or because of the Pep-effect?

Manchester City has been reported to be the most valuable club in the English Premier League. Pep

Guardiola’s current squad cost £702 million to assemble; the highest of any other club in Europe. City are current EPL Champions and favorites to compete for the title this season, currently sitting in second place behind Liverpool. In the five years between 2015- 2019, the only clubs that spent more than City are Juventus and Barcelona. Guardiola’s men won the domestic treble last season further cementing their position among Europe’s elite but their financial endowment has worked hand in glove with Guardiola’s visionary leadership.

Josep Guardiola, the manager who lacks nothing

Guardiola’s prolific career spans over three of Europe's best leagues and major successes in each one of those leagues earned him recognition among the most accomplished managers in history. He won the La Liga four times with Barcelona and the treble. In Germany, he had similar success winning Bundesliga for three consecutive years. Barcelona, Bayern, and Man City are all large clubs with big budgets to sign players. Throughout this managerial career, Guardiola has had a huge financial backing to construct the best teams that the leagues have seen. Pep Guardiola’s impact at Manchester City has surpassed previous managers in both achievements and expenditure.

Manchester does not spare the cost to buy players and this led to their Premier League rival, Jurgen Klopp claiming that Manchester City lived in a “fantasy land”. Klopp himself has spent much less than Guardiola since taking over as a manager at Anfield. Arguably, when a manager has access to all the financial resources they need, there is more room for success without having to make it work with less talented players. Guardiola has spent more at Manchester City than at Barcelona and Bayern Munich combined. The reason behind this being the need to rejuvenate the squad after coming to a team of 11 players over the age of 30 according to the Spaniard. Most of their players have each costed the team between €50 and 100 million showing that they do not have to be conservative when they want a player. The Cityzens have not made nearly as much selling players as they spent buying. They spent around £500 million net in the last five years whereas Liverpool made profits of selling the likes of Phillippe Coutinho. Money is just not an issue for Manchester City which justifies their freedom to recruit talented players at a premium. Many of the Man City signings have succeeded at the Etihad and have been part and parcel of the outstanding overall success of the club in the past few years.

Sheikh Mansour’s investments into the club have exceeded £1.4 billion which has essentially contributed to turn Manchester City into a European powerhouse that spares no cost in buying the top-rated players.

 Most Expensive Manchester City signings

Let’s just quickly look at some of their high profile signings.

 #10 - Eliaquim Mangala, £42 million

The French center-back joined City in 2014 but failed to have an impact in defence. He has spent most of his time at City on loan to Everton and Valencia. The 28-year old was signed by Manuel Pellegrini and did not make it to Pep Guardiola’s first team.

 #9 - Bernardo Silva, £43 million

City signed Bernardo Silva in July 2017 from Ligue 1 powerhouse Monaco, after he had helped the French team secure a league title and a semi-finals spot in the Champions League. The Portuguese playmaker won Man City’s player of the season in his second season at the Etihad.

 #8 - Raheem Sterling, £44 million

Then 20-year old Sterling made his high profile move from Liverpool in 2015. Since his arrival at Etihad, he’s been progressively becoming better each season for City with his best campaign in 2017/2018 season where he netted 23 goals and created 17 assists in 46 games.

 #7 - Kyle Walker, £45 million

Kyle Walker made his move to Manchester City from Spurs in 2017 on a five-year contract. The former Tottenham player has been touted to be on the way out after Pep Guardiola signed João Cancelo from Juventus this year.

 #6 - John Stones, £47.5 million

Stones joined City from Everton to Manchester City in 2016. The English defender was signed for a wholesome £47.5 million price tag. The 25-year old is the first choice center-back for the English national team and has turned out to be a good investment for Manchester City.

#5 - Benjamin Mendy, £52 million

Mendy was signed from Monaco on a five-year contract in 2017, breaking the record at the time for the most expensive full-back. One of the most expensive defenders in the League, Mendy has had a series of injuries that have kept him from playing much at Manchester City.

 #4 - Kevin De Bruyne £54 million

The Belgian has been at the club since 2015. Since signing a 6-year contract to switch from Wolfsburg to Manchester City, De Bruyne is now a key figure on the pitch as City’s playmaker. The 28-year-old midfielder currently stands at 50 assists for the Blues.

 #3 - Aymeric Laporte £57 million

The French defender has been crucial to the Manchester City defence since his arrival in 2018 from Atletico Bilbao. Laporte’s exploits in the EPL has resulted in him being regarded as the second-best center-back in the league behind, 2019 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year in Virgil Van Dijk.

 #2 - Riyad Mahrez £60 million

Leicester City’s former talisman became a City player for £60 million, a price tag that made him the first player to break the £60 million mark for the club in 2018. He has been one of the best players for Manchester City this season, taking advantage of Leroy Sane’s injury to prove his worth.

 #1 - Rodri £62 million

Coming from Atletico Madrid, the midfielder is expected to take the place of 34-year old Fernaninho as a key figure in City’s midfield. The rated player came at a premium because of his reputation and instinct with the ball. Rodri’s contribution to the team is most critical when Fernandinho retires.

 Manchester City’s humble beginnings

City have not always had the enormous financial resources they have today and was an outsider to the elite clubs of Europe. The club’s fortunes turned when the current Manchester City owner, billionaire businessman and member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought the club in 2008. City won three league titles and made record profits since its change of ownership into the Abu Dhabi billionaires’ hands.

Before coming into the picture, Manchester City was far from being a championship team constantly finishing mid-table. His investment has largely been responsible for taking City from mid-table regulars to league title winners. The investment has gone into extensions to the Etihad Stadium state of the art facilities. Sheikh Mansour’s investments into the club have exceeded £1.4 billion which has essentially contributed to turn Manchester City into a European powerhouse that spares no cost in buying the top-rated players. In the 11 years since buying the club, City has won 9 trophies and 3 league titles. City’s success gained the English team, fans across the globe and catapulted them to the position of the most valuable club in the Premier League. The money has also been coming in for City with an annual turnover of £581 million earning, £9 million behind top earners and rivals Manchester United who bagged £590 million in the most recent year.

 Manchester City and Liverpool Rivalry

Jurgen Klopp and Guardiola have to battle it out this season for the league title. Liverpool has been on a near-perfect run which has cemented their chances of taking the title from rivals City. Manchester’s luck has fallen through, falling behind Liverpool by 8 points. The biggest challenge that the club is facing happens to be a shaky defence that has made critical mistakes, costing the champions six points against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich. Aymeric Laporte’s injury has been a major setback as the first choice center-back who will need more time on the sidelines, recovering from a meniscus injury picked up early on in the season.

Guardiola has had to find a temporary suitable combination, which has meant that his defence needed to adjust, pairing up with players they had not been used to playing with. John Stones and Kyle Walker have taken the baton alongside the ageing duo of Nicholas Otamendi. Joao Cancelo, City’s record signing full-back has not played a major role this season as Guardiola’s first-choice. The current defence lacks depth which could cost City the title, as Liverpool charge on, eight points ahead of the champions. Fernandinho moved into the defensive position this season, making a way in the midfield for new signing Rodri. The switch has been far from stable at times, the Brazilian proving that his natural position is in midfield.

 Conclusion

The biggest clubs in the world are usually well endowed with the financial capacity to buy players without sparing the cost. The elite clubs have the cash to continue buying the players that the manager needs and at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has been no different. It’s true that the Spaniard, has been fortunate to have financial access for most of his managerial career and has used this privilege to create some of the best teams, the football world has ever seen including the current Manchester City squad.

To respond to the question, “Is Manchester City’s success just a reflection of their bank account?’’ The short answer is yes. They have been transformed by their access to financial resources via the Arab world. A big part of why the Cityzens have been able to succeed is a reflection of their bank account but Guardiola’s touch has also contributed immensely. Let’s face it, you also need to know which players to buy and how to organize them.

EPL: Who is to blame for Manchester United’s current state?

Six years after Fergie, four managerial appointments and hundreds millions of pounds spent but still no signs of the United ship steadying to former glories. What’s going on?

Manchester United have managed to collect nine points this season from seven fixtures, their worst start in 30 years. United have struggled in recent years and the 2019/20 season has started off with no signs of an improving situation at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have failed to win away from home since February 2019 and have been beaten by Cardiff and Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, with a recent loss to West Ham intensifying skepticism of any quick revival. Recent string of poor results have cemented the fact that the club is in a poor state of affairs and even club legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjær who’s at the helm, seems to also be struggling to get the club in order.

Finding a manager to fill the shoes of Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United was once the exact opposite of what it is now, cup titles and English Premier League dominance were the norm. The Red Devils are a shadow of their former selves with big spending on players and no clear direction. No manager has been able to replicate the astronomic success of Alex Ferguson who retired having won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. Alex Ferguson’s record with Manchester United surpasses any other manager in the history of the English Premier League. Since his retirement, four managers have attempted to take the mantle and six years on, the struggle to find a manager to take the Reds to their former glory is ongoing. The different managers after Fergie, have fallen way short in of his legacy.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer has managed to get rid of players like Smalling who were perceived surplus to requirements but the move to get rid of Lukaku without a replacement, left a big gap in the attacking third that Rashford alone cannot fill and Daniel James although a highly talented player, he too is not on the level of the likes of Sergio Aguero and De Bruyne, a calibre of players that United need, to yet again compete with the best there is.

Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho; Who messed up less?

Manchester United with David Moyes at the helm were a disaster. They finished seventh in the league after having won it the previous year. The former Everton manager, had huge shoes to fill at Old Trafford coming in straight after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. The general feeling was that he was just not the right fit for the team and unsurprisingly he swiftly exited Old Trafford. Louis Van Gaal’s services were quickly enlisted to replace Moyes after an impressive World Cup with the Netherlands in 2014. The Dutch initiated a rebuilding stage by bringing in new players to the squad. The biggest fee he paid for a single player was £44 million on Anthony Martial and more players who did not live up to the hype when they were signed included Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo. LVG’s biggest achievement was winning the FA Cup with the club but finished outside the top four in fifth. His unpopularity with players for his managerial style and tactics made it impossible for him to stay longer at United.

Then in came Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese’s stint in Manchester was a period of hope for. He brought vision and star power and players to the club, including United most expensive player of all time, Paul Pogba. The “Special One” spent two years at Manchester United and led the club best post-Ferguson, when they finished in the top two for the first time in four seasons in the 2017/18 season. During the summer transfer window, he spent £140.9 million on Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba as well as a free transfer of the majestic Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

During his time at Old Trafford, Mourinho won quite a number of trophies. The Community Shield, Europa League and the FA Cup. However, in the 2018/2019 season, they trailed 24 points behind champions City and struggled defensively. The tension between Paul Pogba and Mourinho soured and it had become clear that Mourinho was on his way out of Old Trafford.

Ed Woodard’s misplaced priorities

Ed Woodard is the executive vice president of the club and the key decision maker at Manchester United, the man who hires and fires managers. He has been blamed for making decisions that have set the club back years. When Mourinho wanted to find a centre back to replace Chris Smalling he needed the backing of Ed Woodard. If he had followed the instincts of Mourinho, someone whom he had hired and trusted to lead the team it could have been a different story for Manchester United under Mourinho in his second season with the club. Ed Woodard has spared no expense in rebuilding the team, investing large sums despite the unsuccessful campaigns and losing out on big payments by missing out on the UEFA Champions League. Salaries of Manchester United players like Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez who left to join Inter Milan on loan were the highest in the league. The downside of the exorbitant salaries is that some players like Sanchez who didn’t perform to the level that was expected, become more costly than they are actually worth. As the club continues to invest heavily into signing new players, a remedy that the club needs to finally bounce back, Ed Woodard has been in the process of attempting to overhaul the recruitment process and structure at the club. A top priority at the moment for the role of Sporting Director is Edwin van der Sar, who is the current CEO of Ajax. The Dutch club has been impressive in the past seasons and its leadership, the strategy is what Ed would like to see at Manchester United.

Hits and misses with signings

Man United have bought 29 players since Sir Alex Ferguson left. Some have been big assets to the club and the majority have failed to live up to their potential. One case is that of Alexis Sanchez who was signed by Mourinho, for a position that Anthony Martial had been excelling at. It was generally a bad idea that ended up costing the team a season without an effective left-wing player which Mourinho later realised and brought the Frenchman back into the picture.

If we look at players like Memphis Depay, he was not a good fit at Manchester United but has now become a star player in the French Ligue 1 with Lyon. Di Maria was also no good fit at the Red Devils and therefore lasted one year. Now at PSG, it is a different story. It is also understandable to blame van Gaal for failing to extract the potential from some of these players.

The first player signed when Mourinho came in was Eric Bailly, a defender who has been inconsistent from the onset. He is a player that is prone to injuries and on the field, is prone to risky last ditch tackles that gift opponents, penalties. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is about the most exciting player United has had in the last four seasons and he was a free transfer to the team. What Ibrahimovic brought to Man United with his sharp and fast thinking on the ball as well as efficiency in front of the goal. Fred, who had a massive £60 million price tag, on the other hand has failed to impress at Old Trafford. The Brazilian has made only 29 appearances in 15 months.

Troubles with Paul Pogba who wanted to move to Real Madrid this summer have caused some uncertainty for Man United with the Frenchman ultimately saying wants out of Old Trafford. Pogba is a big part of Man United and the most valuable player on the pitch. The question of him staying or going seems to be a question of his star power and value he brings to the club but his desire to leave might lead to more headaches for Man United going forward.

The verdict

Who really is to blame for the current state that Manchester find themselves in? The last six years have been a period characterized by an unclear strategy for the club, and players that have not flourished despite the impressive talents they brought to the club. The bulk of the blame must go to Ed Woodard for failing to support Jose Mourinho who had made steady progress to reviving the club’s title hopes. Mourinho despite his bad choices also made many good ones that brought the club some glory for winning a few titles. Some of the blame will also go on the different managers that bought in players that were too expensive for what they actually brought to the table.

It is commendable that OGS has also invested in young players that can help to actually rebuild the team with their talent and potential for a subsequent amount of time. Solskjaer has made some of the best acquisitions this season, signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Place, Harry Maguire and Daniel James. It is yet to be seen if the £80 million investment on the English centre-back was worth it or it is just another one of the wasted investments as we have seen so many times in the past. It’s still to be seen whether Ole could turn around the fortunes of Manchester in a way that is similar to what Jurgen Klopp did at Liverpool a few seasons ago and has now recently steered them to a UEFA Champions League title and are also currently favorites alongside Manchester City to win the league.

Let us know what position you think Man United will finish this season?

FT 2019 Preview: Could a change of scenery be on the horizon for SuperMario?

MB45 has been rather quiet in 18/19 by his standards. Surrounded by transfer rumors, coupled with the overly lambasted antagonistic nature of his personality, will Balotelli move on from Ligue 1 this month?

He normally switches clubs when boredom strikes, gets revived and dishes out some more headlines, both on and off the pitch. The football fraternity is not actually the same without him, his carefree attitude excites more than it pisses off.
— Dennis Takaendesa, FirstTouch Africa

The Italian Stallion, Mario Balotelli Barwuah had a relatively quiet 2018 by his standards. The 28-year-old was not as productive on the pitch as a result of the instability of his relationship with OGC Nice’s new coach, Patrick Vieira.

Learning from his career patterns, one realises that the forward of Ghanaian descent easily gets bored and does not hold back from showing it when he does. He normally switches clubs when boredom strikes, gets revived and dishes out some more headlines, both on and off the pitch. The football fraternity is not actually the same without him, his carefree attitude excites more than it pisses off. After a rather barren spell at Liverpool, where he scored only once in 16 matches played over two years, Mario left for Nice and started firing again, with 33 goals and counting to his name in only 51 appearances. He re-introduced the form that saw become the favoured black sheep at Inter Milan and Manchester City, even winning the champions league at the former club.

Having managed only 9 appearances so far in the French Ligue 1 season, sandwiched by moments such as those where he trained alone or missed out on quite a number of other things, Vieira has given the forward the green light to decide on his future even handing him extra few days to make the decision. His contract runs out at the end of the season in May 2019 and Mario will have to choose between staying or getting a new challenge.

One thing is for sure, whether he stays or leaves, Mario will not be in the shadows for long. Like old times, he is bound to come back stronger in the year and give us a lot to ponder and cherish, both great and not so great stuff.

FT 2019 Preview: Will MLS teams have to adjust to a new era?

The MLS is fast becoming a hub of talent for the most respected clubs in world football. Soccer as we know it in America, may be changing for the foreseeable future.

As opposed to the previous state of affairs where the MLS was just a resting place for the super stars who were winding down their careers, its fast becoming a reliable source for budding talent. We are seeing young soccer players from communities which were never really known for the game, coming in and stealing the show.

It came as a surprise particularly to outsiders as quite a number of the Major League Soccer groomed players began to make inroads to some of the perceived best leagues in the world, or at least being linked with such moves. Soccer in the United States is yet to be celebrated as much as in other territories and continents but the effort put by organisers, extra hours shifted in by players and the passion contributed by the most passionate of fans is starting to pay dividends.

As opposed to the previous state of affairs where the MLS was just a resting place for the super stars who were winding down their careers, its fast becoming a reliable source for budding talent. We are seeing young soccer players from communities which were never really known for the game, coming in and stealing the show. Individuals from the Caribbean Islands, Africans and the CONCACAF in general are fast using the MLS as a platform to grow and even possibly transiting to the “soccer capital of the world,” which in my opinion is Europe. We saw individuals such as Venezuela’s Josef Martinez who has apparently gotten his big break at a later age but doing so with much grace and elegance. The 25-year-old banged 35 MLS goals and registered 6 assists in only 39 appearances, that kind of record stands out anywhere around the world. He is just annoyingly prolific and capped the year by winning the MVP award, ahead of the heralded Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Wayne Rooney. Martinez is not the least of them, other players such as the 24-year-old playmaker, Paraguayan Miguel Almiron who was his partner in crime has since been linked to a host of premier league clubs including the Arsenal. Two 18-year-olds namely Canadian footballer, Alphonso Davies of Ghanaian origin and USA’s Chris Richards have already escaped the grasp of Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Dallas respectively, captured by German champions in Bayern Munich.

For the most part, the MLS had been used to receiving stars and now they seemingly have to quickly adjust to giving out. It will be interesting to see how that pans out. If you ask me, it’s a very much welcome development.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #1 Nicolas Pepe

Pepé tops our list out of respect. The Ivorian is burning through the French Ligue 1, and has been absolutely clutch for OSC Lille with 4 of his 12 league goals coming after the 75th minute of play.

No matter how good some players are, football players or otherwise – they kind of need a bigger turf or neighbourhood to show that they belong, to prove that they have the “it” factor. Such is the story of some of the most exciting professional footballers in the game today, they can only become as big as the club they play for and we have a few names that many would want to see move to other pastures. Some have been rumoured away from their clubs and some haven’t but sooner rather than later, transfers are inevitable. Here is the first one on our list.

One Ivorian, by the name Nicolas Pepe recently won hearts in the French Ligue 1 and could be slowly owning them as well. The 23-year-old Lille forward got global acclamation after winning the September French Ligue 1 player of the month ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Just like the above, Pepe is usually deployed as a winger and more often than not cuts inside to grab some precious goals. He is currently French Ligue 1 and Lille’s top scorer so far in the season with 12 goals and 5 assists to his name in only 18 matches and can bang all sorts of goals. From the penalty spot, outside the box, long range shorts you name it. Pepe’s emergence has seen Lille gunning for an unlikely Champions League group stage spot as they sit second on the league standings, a few points off the runaway leaders in PSG.  He has become becoming “mister reliable”, with his latest showing coming over the weekend after scoring Lille’s winner against Nimes that moved them to up to second on the standings. His combination with other players of African descent such as Jonathan Bamba, has made the young Lille team a rightfully dreaded opponent.

With Arsenal and a host of other top European clubs particularly in the premier league rumoured to be interested in his services, he is becoming increasingly harder to keep at Lille.

Let’s continue the conversation. Where would you want to see the Ivorian play?

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #3 Tanguy Ndombele

As we speak, the demand for Ndombele grows. The 21-year-old has already attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona. He reminds Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas, of Ghanaian legend, Michael Essien and has already debuted for the world champions in their competitive midfield setup at only 21-years of age. As we speak, the name Ndombele is almost synonymous to demand. The French international born of Congolese parents is part and parcel of the youthful Lyon team that has been punching way above their weight quite recently. With a super intelligent footballing brain and more than capable legs, Ndombele can and has played almost all over the pitch but remains mostly recognised for being an outstanding box to box midfielder. He first began his senior football career at Amiens, whom he helped secure promotion into the Ligue 1 before being permanently captured by Lyon after a successful loan spell in the 2017/18 season. Actually, it’s been only two years since debuting for Amiens’ first team and he has already been drawn to comparison with the likes of Kante, attracting big boys such as Barcelona, Manchester City, PSG and Chelsea in the process. No wonder he has been in the news daily, with a transfer fee in the region of 80 million euros accompanying all his headlines.

A former scout at French Ligue 1 side Guingamp, who somehow failed to spot the midfield sensation, Phillippe Lemaire didn’t do a bad job in summarising his style of play:

He stinks of football, He is strong and precise. He feels the game. He is capable of creating lightning, to give rhythm to the game, to counterattack but also to press and regain possession.
— Phillippe Lemaire, Former Guingamp Scout

A lot of people should be excited of the prospect of Ndombele clashing with the likes of Sergio Busquets and Rakitic in Lyon’s round of 16 champions league fixture against Barcelona in February next year. But, will he still be in the French side’s colors by then?

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #4 Miguel Almiron

Reportedly sought to replace Ozil at some point, the Paraguayan is perhaps proof that investments made in the MLS are starting to pay off. While Alphonso left for Bayern, Almiron could be further evidence as to why the league is not void of top talent.

You wouldn’t have guessed the fourth person on our list.

To many, he may come as a shocker but to those fortunate enough to be first movers in the field of recognising talent, they will be familiar with the name Miguel Almiron. The 25-year-old Paraguayan enjoyed something a little bit beyond what is normally called a breakout year in 2018. The Atlanta FC playmaker became “the playmaker of the American Major League Soccer,” scoring 13 times and serving up 11 assists in 37 MLS appearances. He was more than instrumental in Atlanta’s 2018 MLS cup triumph, spotted more often than not, combining with the tournament’s MVP Josef Martinez, in terrorising opponents. The usual thing that follows after such greatness, chose not to shy away, comparisons and rumours flew in left, right and centre. One of the most significant piece of rumours was that of reported inquiry by the Arsenal on the player as a possible replacement for one of the world’s best playmakers, Mesut Ozil. In the eyes of many, he would be a more suitable number 10 to Unai Emery who is leading a revolution at the North London club because of his intensity which happens to be a critical component of Unai’s pressing style of play. What seems more becoming is still a move to the English Premier League but in the colors Newcastle. A big money move is reportedly being lined up as Atlanta President has promised not to let him go for “chump change.”

Miggy, as they call him, is surely on the verge of adding to the redefinition MLS’s position amongst the global community of football leagues as a capable source of youth talent after Alphonso Davies’ move to Bayern Munich.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #5 Calum Hudson-Odoi

The son of Ghanaian legend hasn’t had as many chances to impress, but a host of Bundesliga’s elite including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have seen enough to want him in the ranks. Chelsea have a lot to do if they are to keep the 18-year-old in the Premier League.

Some have been rumoured away from their clubs and some haven’t but sooner rather than later, transfers are inevitable. Chelsea have some work to do holding onto the fifth player on our list.

Son of former Hearts of Oak (a Ghanaian Premier League side) midfielder, Bismark Odoi, 18 year-old Calum Hudson Odoi has already become a subject of major speculation. After helping Chelsea’s Academy team to a quadruple in the 2017/18 season, he majorly introduced himself to the world in the Blues’ pre-season games, particularly against Arsenal. Odoi constantly asked rocket-science like questions of Hector Bellerin on the right flank, skipping past him with lightning pace after getting little answers from the Spanish right-back. It was only pre-season but he would have a lasting impact on a host of Europe’s big boys. With 18 months left on his contract and Chelsea still to pen him to a new deal which has become increasingly harder given the player has hardly gotten game time under Maurizio Sarri, Bayern Munich and Dortmund are reportedly monitoring the teenager, on the clock. The Bundesliga champions are eager to strengthen their attack with more youthful players given the imminent departure of long-time servants in Robben and Ribbery while Dortmund, who got a lot from their last ‘heist’ of former Manchester City’s Jadon Sancho and would want to continue in that direction. The 2017 World Cup winner with England-U17 is still eligible to play for Ghana and should you want to get more insight on the kind of player he is, just think of the word electric. He defines it more than it defines him.

Let’s hope Chelsea’s predatory and not very helpful youth system of young players won’t get in his way, as it is for one Ghanaian, Baba Rahman.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #6 Mario Lemina

Even though it didn’t quite work at Juventus for Lemina, the opposite has been true during his time at Southampton. The Saints dependency on him has developed into a “what’s best for the team” scenario, as they try to survive in the Premier League. A January move could be on the cards.

Some have been rumoured away from their clubs and some haven’t but sooner rather than later, transfers are inevitable. The sixth one is actually my personal favourite.

We have repeatedly featured Gabonese international Mario Lemina, here on FirstTouch, more so on his unexploited potential at the Saints. The 25-year-old central midfielder joined EPL side, Southampton for what was actually a club record fee of £15.4 million in the summer of 2017 from Italian Serie A giants, Juventus. Lemina is a huge physical presence in the Southampton midfield, astute in his dealings, technically gifted and possessing a rare ability to slow down or increase the tempo of the game at will. He really can be a real conductor of the midfield orchestra but has quite recently been reduced to only breaking up attacks as Southampton is continually in the fight to stay alive and relevant in the Premier League. Mario is most certainly becoming a hidden gem, lacking the exposure to shine or the specialist to cut it to perfection as a result of the Saints’ challenges. His talent is basically suffocating and a move away could be the needed right of way, one that am overly excited about. PSG’s has already shown interest in getting the Gabonese to Parc de Princes as a possible replacement to the departing Adrien Rabiot. A reported £30 million bid is being lined up and you one cannot possibly belittle the rumour given the Parisians shockingly captured another African star, Eric Maxim Choupo Moting from relegated Stoke City in the summer. Should the move materialise, a new lease of life to Lemina could be one that puts him in a position of similar dominance to his compatriot, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but in a slightly different position.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #7 Kalidou Koulibaly

It wouldn’t be a list without Koulibaly. The Senegalese is perhaps the most wanted defender in the world right now, and it has been great to see the global football community put their collective arms around him after his most recent bout with racism at the San Siro. With a rejected bid of £90 million by a Manchester United already this season, what’s Napoli’s asking price for ?

No matter how good some players are, football players or otherwise – they kind of need a bigger turf or neighbourhood to show that they belong, to prove that they have the “it” factor. Such is the story of some of the most exciting professional footballers in the game today, they can only become as big as the club they play for and we have a few names that many would want to see move to other pastures. Some have been rumoured away from their clubs and some haven’t but sooner rather than later, transfers are inevitable. Number seven is someone who needs no introduction.

Napoli and Senegalese centre-back has been linked with a move away from Naples for quite some time now. It’s almost cliché and somehow not far from boring to hear his name amongst the transfer rumours, week in and out. He is really that good to be honest, everyone wants him and all are eager to see how he will shape up in a bigger club. Liverpool’s big money acquisition of Virgil Van Dijk is paying dividends to the Merseyside club who conceded just 7 goals in 18 premier league matches, the least in the league, consequently leading to a fireproof title charge. Similarly, Koulibaly is a rare find that falls in the bracket of the Dutch if not better and evidence from Merseyside have reiterated that timeless truth, “strikers win games, but defenders win titles.” Manchester United reportedly had their £90 million bid rejected, which would have become the world record transfer for a defender and the all-time African transfer record and Chelsea has endured the same fate in their pursuit of the 27-year-old. He is right there at the top with the best when it comes to minding the goal, everyone knows it and would give anything to get him who can turn any top side into capable title contenders.

Kalidou has a midfielder attitude on the ball, a firefighter mentality when under attack by an opponent and never shies away from an opportunity to put any opponent under siege –almost unreal but undisputedly endowed in many ways than one. I am reminded of one scenario during Napoli and PSG’s 1-1 stalemate in the champions league, Neymar sent Mbappe through with a delicious ball, Koulibaly tracked down the pacey forward and jumped in front of him, hooking the ball out of his way in the process. It was the kind of tackle that, if one is a fraction of a second late, they may win themselves a red card, a perfectly timed intervention that only players like Kalidou can make.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #8 Timothy Weah

The son of George Weah is bound to raise the flag of Stars and Stripes up in the coming few years, but has had to deal with limited game time at the Parc de Princes. We are all waiting for the 18-year-old to be fully unleashed, wether that comes with more minutes in Ligue 1, or elsewhere on loan.

Now, let’s talk about the son of a legend.

Son of Liberia’s president and the 1995 Balon d’Or winner, Timothy Weah, has had to frequently watch his PSG teammates from the sidelines despite his huge talent. The 18-year-old looked like the most favoured of the youth graduates by Thomas Tuchel at Parc de Princes, getting significant chances to shine in pre-season. With the highest scoring average of 72.5 minutes per goal ahead of all of the Parisians’ forwards that include Neymar and Mbappe, one would think he deserves a mention on Tuchel’s team sheets. The arrival of Cameroonian international, Eric Maxim Choupo Moting who has netted only once in 12 outings further reduced the chances of the teenager getting some needed game time. The American international and his mother Clar Weah, who taught him the game and still oversees his development both agree that “he is still tender” and can afford to be more patient in waiting on his chance. However, his fans can hardly wait, once mesmerized by his pace, intricate dribbles and swagger off the pitch, being a rapper in his own right, they want to see more. He is very much an integral part of the new generation USMNT comprising of the likes of Dortmund’s exciting Christian Pulisic and has many Americans on their toes.

The positive news is that the likes of Amiens, Strasbourg, Bayer Leverkusen, Sassaulo are among many others who have expressed interest in loaning his services. The wait may soon be over for the Weah fans.

10 January Transfers Everyone Wants To See: #9 Mehdi Benatia

The 31-year-old Captain fantastic is nearing retirement. After emphatic displays in the Bundesliga and Italian Serie A, one last straw at another top club is what many fan (and most likely his agent) are eagerly waiting for.

Faycal Fajr (L) of Morocco is consoled by Mehdi Benatia following his sides defeat, meaning his team are knocked out of the World Cup after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group B match between Portugal and Morocco at Luzhniki Stadium on June 20, 201…

This next one, is all about class.

Morocco national team captain Mehdi Benatia, is nearing the end of an illustrious career. Some of the notable contributions of the 31-year-old came during his time at Bayern Munich, Roma and most recently at the Old Lady, Juventus. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he showed that he still got it as he expertly marshalled the Lions of the Atlas’ defence and rallied the whole team, though deprived of a fairy tale ending to the campaign. Above his class and ability on the ball, Mehdi’s most sought after attribute right now is his experience. Having fallen out of favour in Turin, with Chiellini and Bonucci preferred for the central defensive roles, Mehdi has had to warm the bench. This has led to many Benatia fans’ desperation to see the veteran move on hoping he would have one famous last straw in the colors of another fancy club. And perhaps even win another trophy in the process.

Big clubs eager to effectively sort out their defensive issues for immediate results have the proven centre-back on high alert. The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal are not sleeping on him and a move may be imminent. Considering Koulibaly whom we have also featured in this series, African defensive stars might just be the get out of jail card for many top clubs.

10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #10 Christian Atsu

The January transfer window is a few weekends away. In our anticipation and excitement of possible moves, we have taken to lay down 10 “unsettled” African stars in the English top flight, the Premier League. The final player on our list is another Ghanaian.

Of course, it is nice to see the likes of Mo Salah, Percy Tau and Hakim Ziyech shine for their nations over the most recent international break but it also raises questions about some popular names who are finding themselves in sticky situations. There are a number of African players dubbed to be the next Sergio Ramos and Xavis of this world but are currently unsettled at club level. Their potential is endangered by their lack of game time. Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?

LW – Christian Atsu

Another Ghanaian international that is unsettled in the English Premier League. Christian Atsu is a talented soccer player graced with the ability to beat defenders at will and provide width for his club. It is unfortunate that the African forward is playing for Newcastle United in these hard times when their owner Mike Ashley is refusing to invest the necessary funds. This has led to Rafa Benitez’s negative tactics against most opponents in the league as they try to avoid conceding goals. The club is not bringing out the best in the forward as they force him all the way back.

Verdict: 26-year-old Atsu should move to a club that plays attractive football. There are several.

10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #9 Isaac Success

CF – Isaac Success

The Nigerian international is a youngster who has been in the books of Watford since 2016. The 22-year old forward had to wait for his opportunity in the English Premier League for a long time till Javi Garcia’s arrival. This season he has played in 8 matches including 4 starts and has scored 3 goals in all competitions. Success has got more to offer but is still being blocked by the limited game-time he is getting despite it being an improvement from last season. The player has the potential to become a regular for Watford and make a name for himself in the EPL among the best Africans to have played in the league.

Verdict: He should request to be loaned out to a newly-promoted club in the English Premier League like Wolverhampton Wanderers and get accustomed to the demands of the league.

10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #6 Mo Elneny

The January transfer window is a few weekends away. In our anticipation and excitement of possible moves, we have taken to lay down 10 “unsettled” African stars in the English top flight, the Premier League. Arsenal’s Egyptian midfielder is also on the ten-man list.

Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?

CM – Mohamed Elneny

Egyptian international Mo Elneny is no newcomer to this feisty topic about African talent being wasted in some of the top clubs in Europe. The 26-year old looks comfortable being used as a fringe player in the post-Arsene Wenger era at The Arsenal. There are not many midfielders with his passing range in the locker but a lot of questions are raised about his defensive contribution. Compared to the other midfielders in the Arsenal team, he looks a part but does not offer something extra to make him stand out ahead of Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey. Maybe his best position is as a box-to-box midfielder free of defensive duties and Arsenal will not offer him that.

Verdict: The Egyptian should find a smaller club like Bournemouth, Burnley or Huddersfield where he can cement a starting berth and break teams on the counter with his quick passes.

10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #5 Victor Wanyama

The January transfer window is a few weekends away. In our anticipation and excitement of possible moves, we have taken to lay down 10 “unsettled” African stars in the English top flight, the Premier League. As we continue with the countdown, Kenya’s Wanyama occupies the fifth player on the list.

DM – Victor Mugubi Wanyama

Enough has been said already about the Kenyan defensive midfielder who is finding minutes very hard to come by at Wembley Stadium (Tottenham Hotspur’s temporary home stadium). Mauricio Pochettino was right to identify the player as the solution to the hole in the middle that had been left by Sandro at Tottenham. In all fairness, the player was thrown straight into the team and shined in his first season at the club in the 2016/17 English Premier League season. He however, has been ousted by the likes of Harry Winks, Eric Dier and even Moussa Sissoko. Wanyama is currently being played in the cup games against lesser teams whilst Pochettino’s first preferences are given a necessary break. This is an unusual situation for a player who was one of the first names on the team sheet at both Celtic and Southampton before his big move to the North London club. At 27, the player is reaching his prime years and cannot be wasted warming the bench at Tottenham when he is more than capable of competing for a first team position within the defensive midfield role at any top club in Europe.

Verdict: He should drop his CV by Manchester City and Arsenal’s doors as he walks out of White Hart Lane.

10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #3 Joel Matip

Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?

CB – Joel Matip

The former Cameroon captain is another African player based in the English Premier League that is finding minutes very hard to come by. Joel Matip has been pushed further away from the first team by the resurgence of Englishman Joe Gomez who has cemented his position alongside Virgil Van Dijk in the centre of the Liverpool team’s defence. Matip, widely regarded as a wall in the German Bundesliga for his heroic antics in blocking threats from his goal, has gradually lost his X-factor at the Anfield club where he is continuously in and out of the team. It seems that he is still the same player from Germany when watching him play but without a guaranteed place in the team.

Verdict: Matip needs a manager who trusts in the 27-year-old’s abilities to fulfil his potential and Klopp is not looking like the right manager for him. There are greener pastures!

Preamble

Of course, it is nice to see the likes of Mo Salah, Percy Tau and Hakim Ziyech shine for their nations over the most recent international break but it also raises questions about some popular names who are finding themselves in sticky situations. There are a number of African players dubbed to be the next Sergio Ramos and Xavis of this world but are currently unsettled at club level. Their potential is endangered by their lack of game time. Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?

CB: Eric Bertrand Bailly

The Manchester United centre-back who has been in and out of the team. Eric Bailly was one of the most trusted players by Jose Mourinho in that shaky United defence but has somewhat failed to live up to the Portuguese’ expectations. Bailly has since been criticised by the former Real Madrid head coach and has found himself down the pecking order behind Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and even the returning Marcos Rojo. It is no secret that Bailly has the command, pace and aerial threat to get the job done but needs to learn from his mistakes.

My Verdict: The 24-year-old is at the right club and should up his game to deserve a place in the team.
