Vitesse, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord opening academies in Zimbabwe?

It’s of no doubt that football in Africa has been lagging behind on many aspects. The number of quality players that make it to the professional scene versus that of those that fail to find opportunities and are forced to change professions before their mid-twenties is astonishing. Many have talked about these things and some have even suggested solutions which are yet to yield impactful results. Clemens Westerhof, the former Nigeria and Zimbabwe national football coach has something brewing for Africa.

Apart from the fact that the Dutchman has coached the national teams of Nigeria and Zimbabwe, the 78-year old football veteran has had some experience in coaching at club level in Zimbabwe. He coached one of the biggest clubs in the country, Dynamos, who have a rich history admired by many.

His plan

The Netherlands born coach, Clemens Westerhof is contemplating the possibility of coaching at a telecom club in Gweru, Zimbabwe and taking up a challenge of building an academy ground-up. The latter is the more interesting part which has been touched by some football greats like Johan Cruyff who influenced the structure and style of play at Ajax, a successful club and academy that has a rich scouting network. Westerhof admires how Ajax have setup a network in South Africa i.e. Ajax Cape Town which has developed players like Thulani Serero. This partnership has brought some developments to the country through the spread of high-quality training techniques applied in other parts of the world.

Clemens Westerhof assumed an advisory role at the Peter Mubi Academy. The football academy wants him to improve their academy and hopefully achieve what he achieved in Nigeria in the past and improve the level of football in Zimbabwe. He is looking to collaborate with Dutch football clubs. The experienced coach wants to take advantage of his network and approached PSV Eindhoven, coached by a football great in Mark Van Bommel who played for Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. He is quoted as having said the above.

Could this be it? The breakthrough that Africa needs. Are partnerships with bigger clubs in the world the solution to Africa’s football ills?

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: (Weekend Report) Bafana floors Seychelles, Ighalo hatrick & more

Matchday 3 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is well behind us now and it didn’t just depart without leaving some memories that will live forever.

The South African men’s national football team were the biggest entertainers of the weekend, scoring at will and showing off some quick pass attacking football against the Seychelles. It was the visitors who opened the scoring for Bafana in the 23rd minute as Nigel Hoareau unfortunately blasted a wondrous goal into his own net. After that, all hell broke loose for the Pirates. As the rain stopped, it started raining goals and the Southerners took turns scoring an assortment of goals - some from set pieces, with a number for them as a result of successive one touch passing, they call it shoe-shine piano at Mamelodi Sundowns. Tau, who plays from English Premier League side, Brighton on loan in Belgium was amongst the goals but the night belong to Lebo Mothiba. The 22-year-old forward who plays for the French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg assisted strike partner, Tau, for the fourth goal of the match in spectacular fashion after he had thumped in a rocket in the first half. He was always involved in the thick of the action and sure looks like an exciting prospect for Bafana. Stuart Baxter’s men now lie top of group E, above Nigeria and are on course to qualify for Cameroon 2019. Next up, they travel to Seychelles on Tuesday for the return fixture.

In the West, Nigeria were hostile hosts to the Mediterranean Knights of Libya running out as 4-0 winners on the day. Chinese Super League based forward, who was far from being impressive at the 2018 world cup for the Super Eagles, Odion Ighalo won some hearts. The 29-year-old bagged the first hatrick of his international career which sent him top of the scoring charts together with Zimbabwe’s Knowledge Musona who is also on four goals so far in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers tournament. Many Arsenal fans will be delighted to hear that Alex Iwobi continued his impressive club form as he controlled the game, also serving up a delightful assist for Ighalo’s second.

Elsewhere, Zimbabwe stunned DR Congo in Kinshasa as they consolidated their position at the top of group G after a hard fought 2-1 win. Substitute, Bolasie pulled one back for the Leopards late on towards stoppage time but Ronald Pfumbidzayi’s strike coupled with Musona’s moment of brilliance had already done the damage. Zim’s neighbors, Botswana, look like they are effectively out of contention for the 2019 AFCON after suffering a 3-0 defeat in Burkina Faso leaving them rooted at the bottom of group I in which the trio of Mauritania, Angola and Burkina Faso are all on 3 points after 3 matches. The Malagasy people are on the verge of celebrating a historic event as the Madagascar national team moved a step closer to qualify for their maiden AFCON tournament after seeing off Equatorial Guinea, 1 - 0 away from home. Should Barea get a second over Equatorial Guinea in Madagascar on Tuesday and provided Senegal repeat the classy performance that earned them a 3-0 win over South Sudan, the two will effectively secure spots at the 2019 AFCON finals.

Tunisia still boast of a perfect record after beating Niger 1-0 in Tunis, Uganda saw off Lesotho 3-0, Namibia fought themselves back into contention beating Mozambique 2-1 from behind, away from home and Morocco narrowly edged Comoros 1-0.

Is Khama Billiat the most important footballer in South Africa?

I vividly remember as an eight year old student in primary school being told that should your school play Gwinyiro Primary School, they wouldn’t a stand a chance because they had Khama. That was wisdom curated by slightly older brothers and sisters of mine in Mufakose, a suburb in Harare, Zimbabwe who had the privilege to be in his inner circle and see him dazzle the Mufakose crowd, young and old alike. Khama Billiat must have been just thirteen at the time, not enrolled in a fancy youth football academy but had made the dusty Mufakose streets and pitches his own. He was already the most important footballer in Mufakose, Harare and fast forward a few years, he has probably become Southern Africa’s pride and treasure. But who is he really?

Early Career

Noises about him definitely got louder as he finished primary school and soon became an Aces Youth Soccer Academy player in Harare where he continued developing into a professional footballer eventually grabbing the attention of Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League giants, CAPS United who handed him his first professional contract. He was so good that Makepekepe failed to keep Billiat for more than three months as South African Premier League side, Ajax Cape Town paid big money and snatched him from right under their noses. It was at Ajax Cape Town where his career really took off.

Blessing the South African PSL giants

Its generally considered a big break or breakthrough moment whenever a young player gets a chance to play for one of the big guns but for Khama Billiat, it was different. The big guns got a big break by winning his signature, he became an unfathomable blessing wherever he was. From 2010-13 at Ajax, Khama bagged a total 21 goals in 89 appearances for the Cape Town club. One of the memorable moments in that period was when Ajax welcomed Manchester United for a club friendly in July 2012. It was really a lowkey match as both teams fine tuned their methodologies before the new season, the match eventually ending in a 1-1 draw but Khama left a lasting impression on Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand. The retired England international described Billiat as an agile and exciting player to watch, with great speed and ball control.

It just got even better for the Zimbabwean as he eventually got a trial with Russian Premier League side, Lokomotiv Moscow in 2013 even though he signed for the Shoe-Shine Piano Boys, Mamelodi Sundowns.

2016, The Crowning Year

At Mamelodi Sundowns, Billiat cemented his place not just as great footballer in the country but across Africa. Bafana BaStyle refined their attractive style of play nicknamed shoe-shine piano with Khama in their ranks as he eventually formed a formidable partnership with youth striker, Percy Tau who recently got signed by English Premier League side, Brighton & Hove Albion. With both of them not short of pace, trickery and killer instinct - it was like watching Messi and Suarez decimate their opponents at Barcelona. He played an indispensable role in the team as Sundowns marched on to glory, winning the CAF Champions League for the first team in their history in 2016, three Premier Soccer League titles, the 2017 CAF Super Cup, 2014-15 Nedbank Cup and the 2015 Telkom Knockout. It was a pretty solid five years from 2013-18 with many armpits raised moments as silverware came like running tap water for Khama and the Tshwane club. In total, he scored 39 goals for Sundowns in 99 appearances and was named the 2016 PSL Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season. He was pimped to the individual continental award by teammate goalkeeper, Denis Onyango who took home the 2016 CAF Player Of The Year Award (for players based in Africa).

Still marching now, now unto legendary status

The 28-year-old parted ways with Sundowns in the summer for another PSL giant, Kaizer Chiefs, for a new challenge. He has already scored 5 goals and assisted 3 others in all competitions for Amakhosi who are currently sitting third on the PSL league standings, a point behind bitter rivals Orlando Pirates. Chiefs will be confident that Billiat can help bring to Soweto , some long lost silverware. The Amakhosi gaffer, Giovanni Solinas was not slow to heap praise on Billiat and highlight his importance to the team;

Khama, the Warrior

He has been capped thirty times now by Zimbabwe and scored ten international goals. He is a major ingredient in the Warriors of Zimbabwe setup and a protagonist, as he oversaw the operation where most successful nation in the biggest Southern Africa Football tournament, COSAFA took home two more titles in 2017 and 2018. He is a crowd favorite and big game player for every club he has played in the most followed and competitive league in Southern Africa, he is a midfielder, a goal scorer, and a dazzler. He is Khama Billiat and perhaps the most important footballer in the Southern African football right now.

FT Hidden Gem Series: Who is Tinotenda Kadewere?

More often than not, people focus on the players that are already known in the most famous leagues in Europe. Not many of us take time to appreciate a rare talent that continues to escape the radar. Look at Jamie Vardy for instance, he shined in England at the age of 28, but who knew about him before then? In this piece, we look at a certain talent from the country of Zimbabwe before he blows up and becomes one of your favorite African players in no time. Here’s what Tinotenda Kadewere is about.

Background

Tino Kadewere was born on the 5th of January in 1996. He started his career at Harare City in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League at the age of 18 where he scored 7 goals just halfway into his debut campaign. In 2014, he left Harare City for Djugardens on a loan deal with an obligation to buy him on a 4-year-long deal. It is at the Swedish club that he started to grow not only in terms of his technical abilities but also his physique. Two years down the line, the Zimbabwean striker was a few inches taller and staking a claim for a place in the AFCON games played in Gabon. Although he failed to make an appearance in the tournament, he was inspired by his involvement in the dressing room and he sought to use that experience to push for further success at his club, Djugardens. Tinotenda famously scored 4 goals for Djugardens in a single league match which is a record that had not been matched since 1978. This summer, French Ligue 2 side, Le Havre scooped him from the Swedish team for a fee reported to be in the region of $2.5 million.

On his move

Tinotenda was excited to take the next step in his football career by moving to the French side in July 2018. Who wouldn’t be? This is the country where players like Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, George Weah, Didier Drogba etc. made a name for themselves. This league also worked as a stepping stone for them when they eventually made their big moves to clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Chelsea. This should be very encouraging to the young player who is hungry for success. He said, “It’s good news for me as a footballer to make another step, but it’s also bad news because I don’t know how I will live in France without all these Djurgardens people.” He was obviously emotional about leaving the club that showed faith in him when he was just a teenager and gave him the chance to play European football.

On his attributes

Tino Kadewere’s favorite position is centre forward. He is an Aubameyang-type of a striker who works best on the shoulders of the defense and can use his lethal pace to beat his markers before scoring goals. It is no surprise that he had already scored 8 goals in 12 matches this season with his pace a menace for defenders in the Swedish First Division. His physique has been growing by the years and he no longer looks like someone who could be budged off the ball like many strikers of his age.

Just like many talented players, he is also capable of playing in a number of positions on the pitch. His pace and trickery also warrants him a place on either flanks because Kadewere is confident that he can beat any defender as long as he has the ball in his feet. These attributes are the reasons why he was deployed on the flanks during his High School years. Obviously, he is no Jay Jay Okocha with the ball yet but the sky is the limit for the 22-year-old Zimbabwean. It is easy to see how this type of player can fit in the squads of the big teams around Europe. Real Madrid have one in Lucas Vazquez who comes off the bench as an impact player. Even Arsenal have that in Alex Iwobi who offers something different from the flanks. Maybe Tino could be that for a team like Chelsea in England or Atletico Madrid in Spain.

On his Injury

If you did not know, Tino Kadewere picked up an injury which was later revealed to be internal ligament damage in his left knee. He had this to say about his injury, “It is obviously boring but it is also part of the football at the same time. Now, the only thing that matters to me is to fix this and come back even stronger.” This injury did not scare off interest from Le Havre who still invested in his services despite the fact that the player was facing 8-10 weeks on the sidelines. It is quite rare to find in football that a club pays so much money for a young player let alone someone who is injured. However, they are confident in his ability and potential to become a great player for the club and rightly so. Tino is a player on the rise.

Achievements:

1. The 22-year old guided his old club, FC Djugardens to the 2017/18 Svenska Cupen on the 10th of May, 2018. He scored four of the 14 goals by the club in the tournament. This trophy was the first title for the club since 2013.

2. Kadewere won the COSAFA Cup (a tournament organized by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations) with his nation on the 9th of June 2018 just a month after lifting a trophy with his club. The young forward scored a brace in the final against Zambia and provided one in a 4-2 victory for the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe beats Zambia in COSAFA Cup

The fight between Zimbabwe and Zambia about who really owns the Victoria Falls was taken to the pitch when they played each other in the COSAFA Championship which took place at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa. This championship is a tournament for teams in Southern Africa which is organised by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA). Zimbabwe came out victorious with a 4-2 score over its neighbour, Zambia.

Zimbabwe was on the front foot early on as a Swedish-based striker, Tinotenda Kadewere found the back of the net in the 3rd minute after pouncing on a loose back pass from the Zambian defender. Zambia came back into the game just four minutes later with Kambole finishing past George Chigova to make it 1-1. Right after the break, Kambole’s speed proved too much for the Zimbabwean defense as he raced through the left flank and finished past the helpless keeer who had tried to close him down. Ronald Kampamba failed to net the killer blow in the 92nd minute for Zambia as he hit the upright. Zimbabwe did not waste time with only 2 minutes left to play as they kicked the ball over the top and straight to Khama Billiat who shared some nice interplay with Kadewere before the young striker scored his second of the night.

After 90 minutes, none of the teams were conceding to a loss as both of them were in a 2-2 draw. The odds were really not in Zambia’s favor now after spurring an opportunity to seal the match and take the trophy home. They were made to regret that later on as Khama Billiat scored the 3rd for Zimbabwe from the penalty spot. He also scored the title-snatching goal at the 101st minute after a brilliant through ball from the 22-year old, Kadewere.

It’s not the first time the Zimbabwean national team has put smiles on their countrymen, because they have won the COSAFA Cup 6 times which is more than any other country down south. I guess it is settled. Zimbabwe is the true kings of Southern Africa, and Zambia fails to win the battle of the Victoria Falls.

LW - Percy Tau

The only player to make it on our list of the next transcendent players while playing in the continent of Africa is Percy Tau. The 23-year old has been the star of the show in the South African Premier Soccer League in recent years. The South African player has been likened to Premier League stars such as Sadio Mane with former football legends like El Hadji Diouf claiming that he is better than the Senegalese forward who plays for Liverpool. CF - Emmanuel Boateng

21-year old Ghanaian striker made the headlines a few weeks ago after inspiring Levante into defeating Barcelona to end their undefeated run. The player scored a hat-trick in the match and many fans have been curious to know what he is about. The young African player joined Levante in the summer of 2017 from Portuguese side Moreirense and has a mixed start to life in Spain. He only started 11 matches for Levante and has scored 7 goals. Three of them coming on that historic night against Barcelona. He made a claim to the rest of the world that he is capable of performing against the very best just like Samuel Eto’o did after he was released by Real Madrid. He went on to make the move to Barcelona and became a legend for the club. Are we witnessing another story of an African player who proves his worth at a small Spanish side before moving to the biggest clubs in Europe? What we know for sure he has started to attract the attention that had been reserved for Kelechi Iheanacho who has stagnated ever since 2016.

RW - Keita Balde

The right-winger was born in Spain and chose to represent Senegal, his father’s country of origin. The 23-year old currently plays for Monaco having joined the club from Lazio in a £27.8m deal after the club lost their star forward Kylian Mbappe to PSG. They trusted that the African player has the right attributes to fill the boots of the most expensive teenager in world football. The player has been somewhat of a success. He scored 8 goals and created 7 in a season where he started 19 matches. If these statistics are not good enough, it shows that we already compare him to the best performers in Europe who have been consistent in providing assists more like Kevin De Bruyne. The Senegalese forward will be on the opposite side of another dangerous forward in Sadio Mane at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018. Senegal will be a force to recon and this is thanks to how these African players have developed on the European scene.

CM - Naby Keita

Naby Keita made it in the German Bundesliga team of the Year in 2017 after guiding RB Leipzig to a second-place finish in the league. The following summer, Liverpool agreed on a deal in principle to take the Guinea international in the following year to the Anfield Stadium. The 23-year old has been the engine for one of the Red Bull franchise teams which have progressed in the past two years. The biggest headache that he will give to his new coach, Jurgen Klopp is his versatility. The player can play anywhere in midfield and can still be offensive. This season alone, he has scored 10 goals and provided 7 assists in all competitions according to WhoScored. He has been linked with clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, and Liverpool before to show the caliber of player he is. He sure is destined to be a top, top player and it would be a mistake if Liverpool decides not to finalize the deal.

Women’s African Cup of Nations 2018 is around the corner

The FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 is making the headlines as expected for it is the biggest sporting event in the world. The African Cup of Nations comes in a close second for African countries and it is equivalent to the UEFA Euro in Europe and Copa America in South America. This tournament presents an opportunity for countries from the motherland to battle out for the title of being called the Kings of Africa.

The women national teams of Africa have their own AFCON tournament which FirstTouch will be covering between November 17 and December 1. Ghana are the hosts for this main event and have the automatic qualification to the tournament. 7 spots are up for grabs and many teams have been fighting it out to make it to the tournament finals in the qualifiers which started in April and will end in June. The top three teams from this year’s Total Women’s African Cup of Nations will qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be hosted by France in 2019. It would be interesting to see who will earn a place for such a tournament after the likes of Zimbabwe surprised many when they qualified for the Olympic Games in 2016.

Zimbabwean teen signs Burnley deal

England born forward, Tinashe Chakwana, has signed his first professional contract with Premier League side, Burnley. Chakwana has been nothing less than phenomenal at the Turf Moor, shining for the club’s youth teams. The 19-year-old was the top scorer for the club’s Under 18 side in the 2016/17 and carried that momentum into the 2017/18 season where he again topped the scoring charts, this time for the Under 23 side. The Wigan-born striker is really showing signs of possibly breaking into the Sean Dyche ’s first team at the club who remarkably secured a seventh-place finish in the English top flight league, behind the acclaimed big six of Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Arsenal.

He is one of only two players from the youth teams that were offered professional contracts by the Clarets. Chakwana and age mate, Mark Howarth signed one-year deals with an option to add another year. Speaking about Chakwana who has been at Burnley since 2015 on scholarship, his former coach, Michael Jolly at the Under-23 side said:

"Tinashe's quality is improving tremendously. CDM - Wilfred Ndidi

Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has already started to make a name for himself in the most competitive leagues in Europe. The 21-year old moved to Leicester in January 2017 for £15m from Genk. He has since proved his worth against some of the best tacklers in the game such as N’golo Kante and Idrissa Gana Gueye who are all of the African descent. Ndidi is leading the Premier League charts as the best tackler with 138 in his 33 league appearances. The player also proved that he is an all-round midfielder and can offer more in terms of goal creation as he has scored a goal and provided 3 assists for Leicester in the league and FA Cup. It is exciting to hear that the young Nigerian is being linked with clubs like Arsenal who have had many problems in midfield ever since Patrick Vieira left the club. Ndidi has the potential to be a Premier League great if he makes a wise decision which involves him moving to a bigger club that can take his game to the next level like the likes of Michael Essien did at Chelsea under Mourinho. The season has ended and his focus is on the FIFA World Cup where he will be representing his nation who will play their first match against Croatia. 

The 21-year old midfield enforcer is as good as anyone you can get in his position and will be looking to strike a formidable midfield partnership with former Nigerian teammate and Golden Boy Winner John Obi Mikel who used to play for Chelsea before he left for China. We expect Ndidi to be doing the ‘dirty work’ for the team before distributing the ball to the playmaker who will transition the play to attack and hurt teams like Argentina, Croatia and Iceland in Group D. Wilfred has a long career ahead of him and should be looking to prove his worth especially against Messi’s team if he hopes of moving from being considered a good player to a great player. The Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) international currently plays as the holding midfielder for Italian giants, AC Milan. The 21-year old is on-loan from Atalanta but looks set to be the heir of long-retired Gattuso who is coincidentally coaching the player at AC Milan. Many comparisons have been drawn between the player and another football legend in Yaya Toure who enjoyed his best years of football in Manchester, England. Kessie has been dubbed the long-term replacement of Yaya Toure in the national team and he has not disappointed. Although the club has had a poor season, Kessie appeared in 36 appearances scoring 5 goals in the process as well as providing 5 assists. Kessie shows early promises of being a dominant enforcer in midfield who can drive his team forward at his own will just like Yaya Toure did in England. He looks ready for the next big challenge, clubs like Arsenal should definitely have the player on their radar.

LB – Ramadan Sobhi

Stoke City’s Ramadhan Sobhi currently plays as a winger in Paul Lambert’s team but his versatility allows him to fill in the left-back position in the Next African Transcendent XI. Sobhi is confident on the ball which has seen him represent his club and country on 29 different occasions scoring 3 goals in a process. The African continent has failed to produce the best talents in this position which means that the focus will be on the Manchester United defender even though he is an already established player. Bailly joined Manchester United from Villarreal for £30m in 2016. He has proved his consistency for the Red Devils but he has had problems with match fitness. He has suffered some setbacks and injuries which have kept him out of the United team of late but the Ivory Coast international is Mourinho’s first preference in the heart of a defense. CB - Chancel Mbemba

Congolese international Chancel Mbemba currently plies his trade in the English Premier League with Newcastle and plays as a center-back. The 23-year old deputized the injured Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune whenever they were suspended or out injured. The player has not been an instant hit in the English Premier League has started only 7 matches in the league and coming on as a substitute on two different occasions for the relegation-threatened Newcastle. The young African player must be relieved that his team eventually managed to survive which means that he has another opportunity to show his worth in the league unless the club takes a new direction and appoint a new coach who could make wholesome changes in the squad. Mbemba is just 23 and can be a great player if given the opportunity that the likes of Kolo Toure were given by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

FT African Legends Series: Peter Ndlovu [Zimbabwe]

As time elapses and the future arrives every single day, memories fade even more so when the now presents pleasantries on a silver platter. We were there when the Egyptian returned, saw and conquered the 2017/18 English Premier League season, breaking all sorts of records and his shooting boots immortalized in an English Museum. Mohamed Salah’s story is a like puzzle piece that fits perfectly into the large narrative painted by African footballers of times past respective of whether the stories were told or not. As we celebrate those who raise their nations’ flag up high whenever they step onto any football pitch on this earth, we look back and respond to the fading memories, rehashing names of those, whose echoes never die out. Let us launch the party, zooming into the Southern African nation of Zimbabwe and reminisce the career of the Peter Ndlovu.

To many Zimbabweans, he is a man that needs no introduction. Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and having roots in one of the most remote areas in the country, Binga - At just 19 years of age, he began writing the story of Africa and African football in one the most competitive leagues in the world. In August 1992, Ndlovu became the first black African player to play football in the English Premier League in Coventry City colors after being recruited from the Bulawayo Club, Highlanders. He quickly became a fan favorite, scoring goals in most important matches, including the first hatrick at Anfield by an away player in over 30 years. He almost became the most expensive player in to be signed by an English club after reports surfaced that Arsenal were ready to part ways with £4m to secure his services in the 1993/94 EPL season. Peter became known as “Nuddy” or “The Bulawayo Bullet” by Coventry City fans before he joined Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and eventually capping off his English career at Sheffield United in 2004. In total, he made 423 appearances for all the English clubs, scoring 91 goals from 1991-2004. He finished his club career at South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

Back home, in Zimbabwe - his impact was crazier. He was capped a hundred times and scored 38 goals but did more than just that. Ndlovu was known as “Nsukuzonke” which described his ability to turn on the style whenever he so desired. In 2004, He captained the country to her first ever AFCON appearance in Tunisia. His blistering performance against Eritrean in the match that sealed the qualification is still treasured by the steward of my brain’s memory center. Nsukuzonke did what he knew best, rounding all Eritrean internationals from the center arc and finding the back of the National Sports Stadium’s saggy blue nets - sending chills down almost every Zimbabwean’s spine. Football lovers and non-football lovers alike. New heights had been reached by the country as a result of one man championing all of that, bodies became numb and the reality of the idea that a people can achieve anything if they believe, became a popular reflection. It was kind of what Salah is doing to Egyptians, giving them goosebumps every time he scores a goal. The numbness was soon dissolved as bodies became projectiles, ululating, whistling, dancing and singing through the night a melody with the chiShona words; “Mo faya, mo faya, mai mwana! Ndikuvaviwa, Ndikwenyeiwo mai mwana!” Meaning, “more fire, more fire, mother of my child. I feel itchy, please scratch me.” Perfectly coining the status quo at the time.

That and many other inexpressible feelings and possibilities Ndlovu opened to the Zimbabwean people as a whole, is his legacy. Not too far ago, in an interview with BBC Africa News, Peter talked about his experience in the English leagues and alluded that his national team colors was what he wore with the greatest pride. He infamously said that he would only part ways with his national team shirt only if he were to give it to the then President of the country, Robert Mugabe.

At 45 years of age, Peter Ndlovu is currently serving as the agent of the Zimbabwean football starlet, Khama Billiat.

RB – Achraf Hakimi

The Spanish-born right back plays for Real Madrid, the biggest club in the history of football. Popularly known as just ‘Achraf’, the player decided to represent the Moroccan national team because of his heritage. the 19-year old is the current second option in the right-back position in Zinedine Zidane’s team. His development as a player pushed Danilo, a £26m signing out of the club. Real Madrid has had some greats in that position before including current club captain Sergio Ramos before he moved into the center-back position. Hakimi is versatile himself and can play in midfield. It is safe to say that the player is in the right place to show if he is capable of competing at the highest level. With a couple of appearances under his belt and under the mentorship of a coach who pays attention to the youth as Zidane, we are guaranteed to be seeing the best of the player in the years to come. For now, we look forward to seeing the player at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 in Moroccan colors.
