FT's 10 Best Moments of 2018: #4 Banyana writes new history

The South African Women’s national team went at 2018 head first, ushering in a new era for women’s football on the continent. Bayana Bayana may have finished runners-up in AWCON18, but they set some unprecedented records doing it.

At FirstTouch, we have a saying that goes like, “a year is never over until we close it.” In the spirit of that ideal, we took our time to look back at the ten most defining moments of 2018, as far as African football is concerned. Could you guess what they are? Ready for number 4?

This happens to be one of the moret recent of moments but easily one of our favorites. The South African football team became the perfect illustration of how women’s football is developing on the continent.

Banyana Banyana which means, “Girls, Girls” in their local dialect were arguably the women’s team of the year in my humble opinion. South Africa blew teams away in the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers, which seemed like routine victories but ones that were ushering in the winds of change. With one of the continent’s most respected teams, Cameroon, invited to the COSAFA tournament in Zimbabwe, South Africa went all the way to lift the Southern African glory trophy defeating the She-polopolo of Zambia in the final. It got even more interesting.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria who happen to the most successful women’s team on the continent by winning eight AWCON trophies had made the game predictable and somewhat not so interesting. Thomas Dennerby’s girls still won the ninth title this month but under very different circumstances. They were humbled to a 1-0 defeat by South Africa in their opening match, narrowly booked a finals place by edging the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon on penalties and even triumphing over Banyana also via a penalty shoot-out in the final. All this coupled by some interesting upsets that involved the likes of Mali eliminating the revered tournament hosts, Ghana from the tournament, signal the evolvement of women’s football on the continent as the playing field becomes more level and interesting.

Banyana in particular have a lot to celebrate as they secured their first ever FIFA World Cup qualification guaranteeing them a trip to France next year. Even the balance of power in terms of the most outstanding individual performances usually rooted in the Nigerian camp was not to be. Banyana’s Thembi Kgatlana scooped the top goal scorer award for the 2018 AWCON after some brilliant solo performances.

There are really exciting times ahead as far as the continent’s women football is concerned.

All this coupled by some interesting upsets that involved the likes of Mali eliminating the revered tournament hosts, Ghana from the tournament, signal the evolvement of women’s football on the continent as the playing field becomes more level and interesting.

Chelsea draw at 1-1 Arsenal

Chelsea Women move 3-points clear at the top

Chelsea Women's player Fran Kirby dribbling against Arsenal Ladies

Arsenal Ladies hosted Chelsea Women on Sunday and were hoping to reduce the gap between them and the leaders, Chelsea. Their intentions, however, did not translate to their performance, at least not early in the match as they conceded to a Fran Kirby goal. Kirby finished off the opener from a Ramona Bachmann’s pass. This is all thanks to a poor clearance from by the Arsenal goalkeeper, Sari van Veenendaal, who gifted the ball to the Swedish striker. This gave a wakeup call to the Arsenal team who started attacking more and saw efforts by Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema saved by the Chelsea goalkeeper. Later on, Lindahl could barely do anything when Mead started running from the halfway line and finished past the goalkeeper with a Messi-like goal. That was not the end of it. The match saw Chelsea having a late attempt to claim victory ahead of Arsenal through substitute Cuthbert from 15 yards out but she was denied by Van Veenendaal. The result gave the chance to Manchester City Women to move level on points with Chelsea but they crumbled to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of mid-table Reading against all odds. Chelsea lead the league with 29 points, Manchester City Women are in second with 26 points and Arsenal Ladies are in 4th with 21 points but are still yet to play their 2 games in hand. Will the Arsenal Ladies manage to catch up with Chelsea who are undefeated in the league so far?

Man City Women win in 8 goal thriller

Manchester City Women progress to the Champions League Semis

The long-awaited second leg to the clash between Manchester City Women and Linkoping finally came and did not disappoint in the number of goals that were scored between the two teams. 8 goals were scored on the night with Manchester City scoring 5 but also conceding three. Jane Ross scored a goal before Georgia Stanway’s brace. Jen Beattie scored the 4th which gave the away side a comfortable 4-0 advantage before the break. They saw a different Linkoping team right after the break as Marija Basunic was on target twice a few minutes after kickoff. Izzy Christiansen eventually scored the 5th and eased the pressure off the English team. This meant that Tove Almqvist's late third barely had any impact on the flow of the game. The English side is through to the semifinals of the Champions League with a 7-3 aggregate score. Who says Women’s football is not a thrill?

Are we seeing a wave of many teams starting to take Women’s football as seriously as they should?

Manchester United apply to have a Women’s Team next season

manu.jpeg

This report might come off as a surprise to many that Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs, had not registered a Women’s team up to this point after scraping it altogether in 2005. However, that is out of the way now as the club have decided to register to join the Women’s League 2 in the upcoming season. This decision has probably resulted from continuous criticism from respected people in the footballing world with Former United player and current Lioness’ boss Phil Neville stating that he would have a conversation with them about it. Manchester United chairman Ed Woodward has said that “The Women’s side should be built with the same image as the male’s team.” If their application is successful, the women’s side will be based at the Cliff training ground in Salford. Besides this decision being long overdue, what are your thoughts?
