Bale scores in a 2-1 win for Madrid against Leganes

Real Madrid FC close in on Atletico Madrid FC in La Liga race for second place

In the wake of the 2-1 win against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Zinedine Zidane made the decision that he would rest his star players in the coming weekend to make sure that they are at their best when they play the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid faced Leganes on Saturday and the boss lined up a much-changed squad that saw players like Llorente, Ceballos, Borja Mayoral, Achraf, Vallejo and Theo Hernandez all getting starts alongside Gareth Bale, who has been rumored to be out of favor at the club. The Welshman scored the opener on the 8th minute after Karim Benzema’s shot was blocked by a defender before falling in the path of Bale who volleyed the ball past Cuellar who could not help but watch the ball pass between his legs and into the net.

Much like the Los Blancos, we have seen all season in La Liga, a lapse in concentration was bound to happen. The first came through Miguel Angel Guerrero and he failed to convert a cross-come-shot into the net as he tried a fancy flick. Nordin Amrabat also found space and hit a shot that beat Casilla in goal but could only hit the crossbar before it whiskered away into the stands. Borja Mayoral Moya then scored the second for Real Madrid in the 45th minute from a cross by Mateo Kovacic on the left.

Leganes found a consolation Darko Brasanac in the 66th minute who was assisted by Amrabat after he comfortably beat Theo Hernandez before sliding into the unmarked player. 10 changes but still Real Madrid manage to win. This means that they are 1 point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid and 12 behind Barcelona in first place.

So near but yet so far for CSKA Moscow as they are knocked out by Arsenal

Arsenal came from behind to draw the match 2-2 away from home

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck celebrates a goal in the Europa League against CSKA Moscow

Arsenal went into the match with what they thought was a comfortable win after beating CSKA Moscow 4-1 at home. The club did not have Xhaka and Mkhitaryan who have been crucial to their success in the Europa League thus far. Elneny started in midfield with Wilshere and Ramsey and it was the Egyptian who would save Arsenal on the night. The match kicked off and the English side showed they were not interested in attacking because of the way they were playing the sideways passes. The gunners did not invest much into the first half with their closest chance of scoring only came from Lacazette who got his shot blocked for a corner kick. The belief of a win started to grow on the Russian side as the team started to take shots at Petr Cech. The aging goalkeeper eventually conceded a goal in the 39th minute when Chalov tapped into the net after Cech had punched the ball out from a shot and his defenders did not react quick enough. Kristijan Bistrovic’s furious half-volley shot almost made it 2-0 before the break but it sailed just wide. After the break, Moscow scored the second through Nababkin with an almost similar goal to the first. Egyptian midfielder, Mo Elneny, took up the responsibilities of creating chances in a match were Ozil was marked as he played a nice one-two with Welbeck before sliding a beautiful through ball that was coolly finished by the English forward. Danny Welbeck deserved that goal after doing the most of the defender who was marking him on the left flank prior to the goal. Ramsey scored the second for the gunners to make it 2-2 when Elneny again, slid a ball that passed two defenders and was met by the Welshman who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. Many expected him to pass it to Ozil there who was in a better position to score but who cares now that the ball is in the back of the net. Another African player rescues an English club’s dream of European glory this season. One must wonder how much talent really is in that continent when these big clubs still wait for the African players to save them.

Atletico Madrid played Lisbon in the same competition today and lost the match 1-0. This means that they have gone through with a 2-1 aggregate. Both Atletico Madrid and Arsenal will be hoping to avoid each other in the semifinals. The UEFA Europa League draw will be held on Friday and only then will we find out about the teams that will face each other. Marseille and RB Salzburg are the other teams who have made it to this stage. Good luck at the draw!

England Women win 2-0 against Bonsia Women

The Lionesses’ victory lands them on top of the table

Tony Duggan playing with England Women ahead of the 2019 World Cup

England are now in pole position to qualify for the 2019 World Cup in France. England boss Phil Neville, had enjoyed success in other competitions after signing on as the new boss but was patiently waiting for his first win in the World Cup qualifiers after last week’s draw. England dominated the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina Women. As they ended the match with 80% possession and had 21 shots in total as compared to Bosnia’s 20% possession and 1 shot in the whole match. These stats however did not work to the advantage of England in the first half as they failed to score. Greenwood picked up a second yellow card and was given marching orders on the 47th minute. England went on to score even with a player short as Tony Duggan who plays for Barcelona, converted Mel Lawley’s cross. This is her 20th goal in her international career. Bosnia also lost a player as their captain Amira Spahic was sent off on the 59th minute. Jodie Taylor scored the second from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 for England after Mead was brought down in the box. This win for England means that they have moved to the top of the group with a two point advantage ahead of Wales in Group A.

England Women vs Wales Women ends in a goalless draw

Scotland loss a setback in their ambitions to qualify for 2019 World Cup

Jodie Taylor and England Women's National Team

Phil Neville took over his first Qualifications tournament as the England boss and saw them draw against the leaders of the group. The two teams are vying for top spot in the World Cup qualifiers with only one team getting a guaranteed position at the 2019 World Cup Finals in France. Wales had the first attack of the match on the 8th minute as Rachel Rowe met the ball on the volley and Telford was there to parry the ball to safety. A minute later, the England defense was tested again from a corner kick and Lucy Bronze cleared the ball which looked like it had crossed the line. England had little in the match until Jordan Nobbs took a shot from 25 yards out. The ball looked destined for goal until Wales keeper, Laura O’Sullivan met it and pushed it onto the bar before it went out on the 33rd minute. The first half did not produce much after that and the teams went for a break at 0-0. Ellen Drive also tested the Wales goalkeeper on the 71st minute with a thunderous strike but the keeper was having none of it. Laura O’Sullivan was the clear man of the match with some fantastic saves to keep the Lionesses at bay.

Fishlock: England game not do or die

Wales vs England match build up

Welsh International Jess Fishlock plays for Manchester City

The 2019 Women’s World Cup qualifiers are around the corner and Wales are set to face England at St Mary’s Stadium on Friday, 6th of April, 2018. Wales are ranked 34th in the world rankings and are looking forward to using their underdog status to their advantage as they face the Lionesses. The fixture brings together two teams who are fighting for the top spot in the qualifiers with Wales lying top with 10 points and England just behind with 9 points having played a game less than the leaders.

Fishlock is quoted to having said, “This game is huge for us but it’s not do or die. We have four games to get where we want to get to and if we put everything into this game it might derail what we’ve got to do next.”

She said this after sensing the hype and atmosphere building up towards the match. She encourages her teammates not to get swirled up emotionally and lose focus in the match which is expected to bring a huge crowd. Fishlock has 108 caps for Wales already and is hopeful that her team will break the duck and finally qualify for a major tournament in the 2019 World Cup in France. Wales have not conceded yet in the qualifiers and are looking to get one over the English side that is ranked as the second-best team in the world. Friendships will be put on hold. Fishlock is desperate for Wales to qualify with her country such that she would trade all her individual accolades to do so if only she could. We hope this passion does not go to waste and that her teammates will help her dream come true.

Real Madrid want to sell Gareth Bale in the summer as according to Guillem Balague

The Welshman’s surplus to requirements

Gareth Bale celebrates a goal for Real Madrid in La Liga

Pictured in the shadows is Real Madrid’s most expensive player who is of Welsh origins. Gareth Bale joined Madrid from Tottenham in a deal worth £85.3m. He made an instant impact in his first season by helping Real Madrid win the La Decima (10th UEFA Champions League) in 2014. He has since been plagued by injuries including his calf which has recurred for many years. This season he has been a bit part player and has often been called off the bench to see through matches with his direct runs. Bale has basically been replaced by Spanish wonderkid Asensio, Isco and Vazquez have been preferred ahead of him. Questions are raised towards his future because his lightning pace does not seem as that much of an asset the club needed when they brought him in.

In all fairness, Bale is a threat when he is fully fit but the problem with him is that he has become injury prone. His fitness concerns do not add value to a big club like Madrid who invested a lot in him which has led to their decision to sell him in the summer as according to Guillem Balague. The Spanish football expert says that the winger is edging closer to a Premier League return after falling down in the pecking order in Zidane’s team. English teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City have the finances to carry out this deal and will be on alert. Some rumors of a move to Bayern have also surfaced and this could be a more sensible move for the Welshman as he will be a long-term replacement for the aging Arjen Robben on the right. However, it is a doubt that Bayern would fork out hundreds of millions of pounds on a player like him. We just have to wait and see what the summer brings. How do you see Bale fitting in your team of choice? We want to know where he will be playing and who he will be replacing in the Starting XI.

Russia 2018: 80 year World Cup streak comes to an end

No British referees at World Cup 2018

FIFA has chosen 36 officials for the World Cup tournament in Russia and none of them are from Great Britain. This is the first time that no referee is chosen from either England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland in 80 years. The most obvious omission is Mark Clattenburg who was part of the list last summer. He, however, left his job with the Premier League and forfeited his place. The Football Association did ask to replace Clattenburg with another official but this request has been rejected. It is also worth mentioning that there also no British officials among the 63 assistant referees selected. What a shame it is for a country that boast about having talent and skills in all aspects of their game. This comes as no surprise to a few with managers like Arsene Wenger criticizing the referees who seem not to be working enough. Some have been culpable of committing fundamental errors and these have resulted in their omission from the final list. On the other hand, six African referees have been chosen instead and they represent Algeria, Senegal, Gambia, Egypt, Zambia and Ethiopia. Be careful England, Africa is on the rise.
