10 Africans unsettled in the English Premier League: #10 Christian Atsu

Of course, it is nice to see the likes of Mo Salah, Percy Tau and Hakim Ziyech shine for their nations over the most recent international break but it also raises questions about some popular names who are finding themselves in sticky situations. There are a number of African players dubbed to be the next Sergio Ramos and Xavis of this world but are currently unsettled at club level. Their potential is endangered by their lack of game time. Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?

LW – Christian Atsu

Another Ghanaian international that is unsettled in the English Premier League. Christian Atsu is a talented soccer player graced with the ability to beat defenders at will and provide width for his club. It is unfortunate that the African forward is playing for Newcastle United in these hard times when their owner Mike Ashley is refusing to invest the necessary funds. This has led to Rafa Benitez’s negative tactics against most opponents in the league as they try to avoid conceding goals. The club is not bringing out the best in the forward as they force him all the way back.

Verdict: 26-year-old Atsu should move to a club that plays attractive football. There are several.

It’s not exactly a normal thing, not to have a Ghanaian representing the West African nation at the top level of global football. Not just repping but also making the buzz. We have had several Ghanaians over the years who came, saw and conquered the revered top five European leagues. Asamoah Gyan is one such name, so is Kevin Prince Boateng and ofcourse the legend, Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayew. The father to the two Ayew brothers who currently play for Crystal Palace and Fenerbahce. Abedi was actually nicknamed Pele because he was believed to be just as good as the Brazilian Pele. Currently there are still quite a number of Ghanaians doing great exploits in the European Leagues such as Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey, the ever-so reliable central defensive midfielder if I may add. However, we are used to Ghanaians leading the frontlines, scoring goals and taking on defenders which we have not really seen for a while now. Newcastle’s Christian Atsu has the abilities but we have not been seeing it from him as of late. Here is what’s up.

In my humble opinion, Atsu is simply a player lacking the confidence to make an impact at a level such as the English Premier League.

After delivering the Best Player of the tournament performance at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, even winning the goal of the tournament in the same campaign for his cracker against Guinea, Atsu looked like the real deal. His pace, high technical ability, trickery and eye for goal had resemblance of the infant careers of greats such as Eto’o and Seydou Keita. This was the period when he was still in Chelsea’s books after they had hijacked him from Porto for a reported £3.5 million in a five-year contract. His fate quickly became like that of fellow Ghanaian Baba Rahman, a Chelsea player still yet to really feature for the Blues but shipped on loans from time to time. For close to five years after signing for the London Club in 2013, Atsu was loaned to several clubs including Eredivisie outfit, Vitesse where he instantly became a hit winning the 2013/14 Vitesse Player of The Season. He then appeared for Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle on loan before permanently signing for Newcastle in May 2017. This was just after Atsu’s stellar campaign with Rafa Benitez’s men, winning the 2016/17 EFL Championship thus leading the Magpies back into the Premier League. Since then, Atsu’s form has been far from impressive.

Because of the position and current status of the Magpies as a not-so stable club fighting to just stay in the English top flight, Rafa Benitez has had to resort to “negative football”, more often than not. The likes of Christian Atsu have been defending in matches more than they have been attacking, whereas the latter actually happens to be his stronger attribute. As you can imagine, such tactics tend to rob players of confidence, to even attempt to take on players and go all out in attack the few times they get the ball and Christian Atsu has not been spared of such. In addition, there is a direct correlation between a developing player and the influences around that player to give support and set an example. For instance, Alex Iwobi has earned a reputation of nutmegging opponents and the nickname, “Nigerian Messi” in the process because of his red hot form this season. He was a player low on confidence in the 2017/18 campaign, operating at the least favored end of the spectrum but now, with his confidence back and the likes of Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan around him, there is no telling how far he can go. On the other hand, Atsu never had any of such opportunities in the Championship and neither did Chelsea grant him such an opportunity and that’s how he started losing his confidence and needing even more mentoring from the greats.

With Newcastle struggling and in threat of relegation, you can only hope that something changes for the 26-year-old who still has got time in his career to turn his fortunes around and unleash the lethal Ghanaian in him. I am starting to think the Ivorian Jean Michel Seri who was once linked to the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea but instead opted for struggling Fulham might be at risk of a facing a similar fate but that’s a story for another day.

In this piece, we reflect upon the career of a certain Cheick Tiote, who made a name for himself at Newcastle United, in Tyneside, Great Britain. The African midfielder continued the legacy left by Michael Essien of a traditional African midfield destroyer. At FirstTouch, Tiote’s memories still live with us and here’s how we celebrate his life.

From barefoot football to Europe

The African player was a typical example of a street footballer. He did not grow up in an academy like many and started playing barefoot street football at 10 years of age. Tiote owned his first pair of boots at 15, before he started his professional career at Ivorian minor league side, FC Bibo. Being a school drop out at a young age, the player was driven to succeed in playing soccer at the highest level. He is quoted as having said, “I worked and worked and worked for it and it is because of that hard work that I have managed to make it.” This he had to say during his time in England when he had already played for Belgian side, Anderlecht and FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Stunner against Arsenal

Tiote is mostly remembered for scoring a stunner from 30 yards out of the box against Arsenal. He was part of the team that achieved the greatest comeback in the English Premier League as Newcastle came back from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in February 2011. His goal was the fourth for the club and the equalizer in an 8-goal thriller. What made it special was the connection of the ball and the leg on the volley by a player in full speed. The level of technique that it took to volley that ball into the back of the net earned Tiote some deserved praise for a wonder goal in the English Premier League. He left one for the history books.

Fierce Trio

Also, the defensive midfielder partnered Manchester City legend, Yaya Toure and Jean-Jacques Gosso in the spine of the team for his national side, Ivory Coast. It was him and Gosso Gosso that provided cover for Yaya and allowed him to influence games in the final third. It was unfortunate that they could not lift the African Cup of Nations when Didier Drogba was still around but they eventually managed to win it with Toure as captain in 2015.

Untimely Death

After his stint at Newcastle, Cheick Ismael Tiote decided to move to the Chinese Super League side, Beijing Enterprises in 2017 as he winded down his career. It was reported that on June 5, 2011, Cheick Tiote suffered a cardiac arrest in training which took his life 16 days before his 31st birthday. His death was a shock to the football world and it was dark day. We have him to thank for contributing towards the game with his all as commitment levels, second to none.

CF - Emmanuel Boateng

21-year old Ghanaian striker made the headlines a few weeks ago after inspiring Levante into defeating Barcelona to end their undefeated run. The player scored a hat-trick in the match and many fans have been curious to know what he is about. The young African player joined Levante in the summer of 2017 from Portuguese side Moreirense and has a mixed start to life in Spain. He only started 11 matches for Levante and has scored 7 goals. Three of them coming on that historic night against Barcelona. He made a claim to the rest of the world that he is capable of performing against the very best just like Samuel Eto’o did after he was released by Real Madrid. He went on to make the move to Barcelona and became a legend for the club. Are we witnessing another story of an African player who proves his worth at a small Spanish side before moving to the biggest clubs in Europe? What we know for sure he has started to attract the attention that had been reserved for Kelechi Iheanacho who has stagnated ever since 2016.

The right-winger was born in Spain and chose to represent Senegal, his father’s country of origin. The 23-year old currently plays for Monaco having joined the club from Lazio in a £27.8m deal after the club lost their star forward Kylian Mbappe to PSG. They trusted that the African player has the right attributes to fill the boots of the most expensive teenager in world football. The player has been somewhat of a success. He scored 8 goals and created 7 in a season where he started 19 matches. If these statistics are not good enough, it shows that we already compare him to the best performers in Europe who have been consistent in providing assists more like Kevin De Bruyne. The Senegalese forward will be on the opposite side of another dangerous forward in Sadio Mane at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018. Senegal will be a force to recon and this is thanks to how these African players have developed on the European scene.

CM - Naby Keita

Naby Keita made it in the German Bundesliga team of the Year in 2017 after guiding RB Leipzig to a second-place finish in the league. The following summer, Liverpool agreed on a deal in principle to take the Guinea international in the following year to the Anfield Stadium. The 23-year old has been the engine for one of the Red Bull franchise teams which have progressed in the past two years. The biggest headache that he will give to his new coach, Jurgen Klopp is his versatility. The player can play anywhere in midfield and can still be offensive. This season alone, he has scored 10 goals and provided 7 assists in all competitions according to WhoScored. He has been linked with clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, and Liverpool before to show the caliber of player he is. He sure is destined to be a top, top player and it would be a mistake if Liverpool decides not to finalize the deal.

CDM - Wilfred Ndidi

Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has already started to make a name for himself in the most competitive leagues in Europe. The 21-year old moved to Leicester in January 2017 for £15m from Genk. He has since proved his worth against some of the best tacklers in the game such as N’golo Kante and Idrissa Gana Gueye who are all of the African descent. Ndidi is leading the Premier League charts as the best tackler with 138 in his 33 league appearances. The player also proved that he is an all-round midfielder and can offer more in terms of goal creation as he has scored a goal and provided 3 assists for Leicester in the league and FA Cup. It is exciting to hear that the young Nigerian is being linked with clubs like Arsenal who have had many problems in midfield ever since Patrick Vieira left the club. Ndidi has the potential to be a Premier League great if he makes a wise decision which involves him moving to a bigger club that can take his game to the next level like the likes of Michael Essien did at Chelsea under Mourinho. The season has ended and his focus is on the FIFA World Cup where he will be representing his nation who will play their first match against Croatia. 

The 21-year old midfield enforcer is as good as anyone you can get in his position and will be looking to strike a formidable midfield partnership with former Nigerian teammate and Golden Boy Winner John Obi Mikel who used to play for Chelsea before he left for China. We expect Ndidi to be doing the ‘dirty work’ for the team before distributing the ball to the playmaker who will transition the play to attack and hurt teams like Argentina, Croatia and Iceland in Group D. Wilfred has a long career ahead of him and should be looking to prove his worth especially against Messi’s team if he hopes of moving from being considered a good player to a great player. Arsenal has been reported to be sniffing around the possibility of capturing the talented African midfield enforcer and making him their new Vieira who will shut opponents if they try to break them on the counter. Will Ndidi be ready by the time the tournament kicks off in 21 days?

CDM - Franck Kessie

The Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) international currently plays as the holding midfielder for Italian giants, AC Milan. The 21-year old is on-loan from Atalanta but looks set to be the heir of long-retired Gattuso who is coincidentally coaching the player at AC Milan. Many comparisons have been drawn between the player and another football legend in Yaya Toure who enjoyed his best years of football in Manchester, England. Kessie has been dubbed the long-term replacement of Yaya Toure in the national team and he has not disappointed. Although the club has had a poor season, Kessie appeared in 36 appearances scoring 5 goals in the process as well as providing 5 assists. Kessie shows early promises of being a dominant enforcer in midfield who can drive his team forward at his own will just like Yaya Toure did in England. He looks ready for the next big challenge, clubs like Arsenal should definitely have the player on their radar.

LB – Ramadan Sobhi

Stoke City’s Ramadhan Sobhi currently plays as a winger in Paul Lambert’s team but his versatility allows him to fill in the left-back position in the Next African Transcendent XI. The 21-year old comes from the land of Egypt which has produced a 2018 Ballon D’Or contender in Mo Salah and he is as skilled as the Liverpool player. Sobhi is confident on the ball which has seen him represent his club and country on 29 different occasions scoring 3 goals in a process. Not bad for a 21-year old who is not a starter for the English club. The excitement brought about when such young players take on the best in the league prove that the continent of Africa has so much talent and it is just a matter of time before that talent translates to strong teams that can compete for the FIFA World Cup and other international tournaments.

CB - Eric Bailly

The African continent has failed to produce the best talents in this position which means that the focus will be on the Manchester United defender even though he is an already established player. Bailly joined Manchester United from Villarreal for £30m in 2016. He has proved his consistency for the Red Devils but he has had problems with match fitness. He has suffered some setbacks and injuries which have kept him out of the United team of late but the Ivory Coast international is Mourinho’s first preference in the heart of a defense. Bailly is popular for his confident and aggressive approach to the game not forgetting his passing abilities. He can easily pass as a defensive midfielder because of his power, pace and forward runs that he often makes whenever he is given the freedom to roam around the pitch in search for a goal. CB - Chancel Mbemba

Congolese international Chancel Mbemba currently plies his trade in the English Premier League with Newcastle and plays as a center-back. The 23-year old deputized the injured Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune whenever they were suspended or out injured. The player has not been an instant hit in the English Premier League has started only 7 matches in the league and coming on as a substitute on two different occasions for the relegation-threatened Newcastle. The young African player must be relieved that his team eventually managed to survive which means that he has another opportunity to show his worth in the league unless the club takes a new direction and appoint a new coach who could make wholesome changes in the squad. Mbemba is just 23 and can be a great player if given the opportunity that the likes of Kolo Toure were given by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

RB – Achraf Hakimi

The Spanish-born right back plays for Real Madrid, the biggest club in the history of football. Popularly known as just ‘Achraf’, the player decided to represent the Moroccan national team because of his heritage. the 19-year old is the current second option in the right-back position in Zinedine Zidane’s team. His development as a player pushed Danilo, a £26m signing out of the club. Real Madrid has had some greats in that position before including current club captain Sergio Ramos before he moved into the center-back position. Hakimi is versatile himself and can play in midfield. It is safe to say that the player is in the right place to show if he is capable of competing at the highest level. With a couple of appearances under his belt and under the mentorship of a coach who pays attention to the youth as Zidane, we are guaranteed to be seeing the best of the player in the years to come. For now, we look forward to seeing the player at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 in Moroccan colors.

GK – Andre Onana

22-year old Onana is a goalkeeper for Dutch club Ajax who guided his team to a second-placed finish in the league. Andre Onana hails from Nkol Ngok, Cameroon and is showing early promises of becoming a European hit like his predecessors. Liverpool qualify for Champions League at the expense of Chelsea

Newcastle hosted Chelsea at St James’ Park with the away team looking for a win in hope of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Liverpool sat in 4th place with a 2-point advantage over Chelsea in 5th. A result at St James’ Park would not be enough so they hoped that Liverpool would lose against Brighton. What a complex situation that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic is not comfortable with. The match kicked off and there was not much a difference between the two teams until Thibaut Courtois saved a rocket of a shot from Jonjo Shelvey who tried his luck 30 yards out. On the 22nd minute, Dwight Gayle scored the opener of the match from a rebound after Murphy’s effort was punched into his path by the Chelsea goalkeeper. That was the only goal of the first half in a must-win match for Chelsea who had their UEFA Champions League qualification on the line. The London side came close to scoring in the 52nd minute when Olivier Giroud connected to Ross Barkley’s cross before flicking it towards goal. The ball looked destined for goal and would have been a contender for one of the best goals of the EPL this season but Dubvraka was having none of that as he produced a fingertip save to deny the French striker. Ayoze Perez diverted in Shelvey’s shot on the 58th minute to make it 2-0 to Newcastle. The Spanish striker scored the third and final goal of the match from a pass by Florian Lejeune. This victory means that Chelsea will join Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League tournament next season.

In other news, Mo Salah broke the record of goals scored in 38-matches league. He converted his 32nd English Premier League goal in Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Brighton which means that he has scored more than EPL Legends like Shearer, Ronaldo, Van Persie, Van Nistelrooy etc. The African player has had an outstanding season having led his team to the UEFA Champions League final which will be played against Real Madrid on the 26th of May. Sunderland have been relegated to League One

You must be shocked to see this headline again for the second year running. Yes, they have been relegated again. The club had been in the Premier League for a couple of years and survived countless times from the relegation battle. The last time they survived was when they brought in the expertise of Big Sam Allardyce and they had the striker Jermain Defoe scoring goals for them. It did not even make sense why there were in that situation again with the players they had on paper but soon changed. The following year (2016/17) they could not escape the drop. This meant that they had been demoted to the Championship and most of their players decided to leave the club including Defoe. However, this did not stop us from thinking that they would soon return because of the way they had been fighting to survive in the league for a length of time. Today, we receive some shocking news that the club has failed to make the cut in the second division in England and have been relegated again but this time to League One. What an embarrassment to a club that looked to be on a good path when they started recruiting and developing talent from England. The likes of Duncan Watmore typified this talent and was even rumored to be on Manchester United’s radar to be their young prodigy because of his potential. Their local rivals Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League last season and have already secured their safety from the drop as they currently sit on 41 points. It must be a difficult pill to swallow but their 2-1 loss to fellow relegation threatened Barton all but confirmed their downgrade. Will they recover or they have become the new Portsmouth?

Controversial Barton to become Fleetwood coach

The 35-year old midfielder who is currently serving his football match ban has been appointed to become the new head coach at low league Fleetwood. The midfielder is infamous for his free-spirited opinions and saying the most bizarre of things that one would not expect. He is very cocky, and it is quite shocking as to how Fleetwood have made this decision to trust the midfielder to lead their team to glory. The player has already represented some big clubs not just in England but in Europe as well as he has played for Newcastle, Manchester City, Burnley, Rangers, and Marseille. The player has signed a three year deal with the club and is expected to retire from being a player first that is after the 2nd of June where his ban will end.

He had this to say about the move, “I’m very excited by the challenge and the project at Fleetwood Town. It’s a club I’ve known for a long time, and a chairman I already have a very good relationship with.”

This move has brought some excitement to the chairman of the club who believes that the Barton will bring his experience and profile. Newcastle is now safe from the drop

Newcastle United have secured their place in the English Premier League for the 2018/19 season. This came after they came back from 1 goal down to defeat a rejuvenated Arsenal side 2-1 at home. This victory marks the first time the club has won a league match against Arsenal since 2005. Arsenal took the lead from Lacazette’s goal who was thankful to the new signing Aubameyang for setting him through on goal. Many anticipated that Aubameyang was going to be Lacazette’s replacement but the two have proved that they can play together which is giving a selection headache to Wenger at times. Maybe the pair has benefited from Mkhitaryan’s injury as they have shared the pitch more since the Armenian’s setback. Arsenal had a couple of other chances but could not bury them away and were left to rue those chances later on in the match. Ayoze Perez was the first to score for Benitez’s side as he finished intelligently from the near post after darting past Mustafi. The German defender has been a suspect since his acquisition and he really has to do a lot to win the Arsenal fans over. Matt Richie the winner at the 68th minute which secured their 4th straight win.

Newcastle have reached the 40-point mark which means that they are safe from the drop. This defeat for Arsenal means that the club have suffered their fifth successive league match away from home for the first time since 1984. It only proves that the club is unreliable because they had seen a turn in results after their bad patches in the earlier parts of the season. So much for a club that claims to be a big club in England.
