Romelu Lukaku - "The Belgian of Congolese descent"

With over 100 Premier League goals to his name, Belgium’s record goal scorer has had a life and career full of goals. Check out motivates the man who leads the line for Belgium and Manchester United.

Some call him the Belgian Beast and at a local watch party during the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-final against Brazil, an ecstatic Manchester United fan from the crowd shouted, “Cristiano” Lukaku! The 25-year-old Manchester United forward had outpaced Paulinho and dribbled past Fernandinho to assist Kevin De Bruyne for Belgium’s second goal as they stormed into the semi-finals after beating the Samba boys 2-1 in a thoroughly entertaining match-up. This was a few days after Romelu Lukaku had pulled off a world class dummy to allow Nacer Chadli to steal a third goal for the Red Devils as they remarkably came back from 2 goals down against Japan to get passage into the quarter-finals. The year 2018 became one of the highlights for the forward’s outstanding career, but what other juicy details are there to it?

Football with a purpose

Speaking to the Players’ Tribune, Romelu reminisced of his tough childhood , highlighting that he had made up his mind a schoolboy to lift his mother and family out of poverty by kicking the ball as hard as he could. The 25-year-old was born in Antwerp, Belgium to a Congolese mother and a father who played football and represented Zaire (present day DR Congo) at international level

I kept my promise to myself for a while. But then some days I’d come home from school and find my mum crying. So I finally told her one day, “Mum, it’s gonna change. You’ll see. I’m going to play football for Anderlecht, and it’s going to happen soon. We’ll be good. You won’t have to worry anymore.” I was six.
— Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United & Belgium Forward

He grew up a more than determined kid, playing the game he loved for with a purpose most dearest to him. That was, giving his mother a better life. Fast forward a few years, it all went out as Rom had envisioned. He weathered all there was to brave, even recalling the tough times where criticisms flew in left, right and center during dry periods that are common to most football players. Even racially inspired critics would also say their piece:

When things were going well, I was reading newspapers articles and they were calling me Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian striker. When things weren’t going well, they were calling me Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian striker of Congolese descent.
— Romelu Lukaku - Belgium's Record Goal Scorer

With the kind of scrutiny that Mourinho and Manchester United are currently experiencing, Lukaku is one such player who would probably not flinch in all these times.

Pure grit

I remember not being Lukaku’s biggest fan when he signed for Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United for a fee reported to be £75 million, plus £15 million in add-ons. I have always thought that his services were overpriced and perhaps they are. One thing is for sure though, you cannot take anything away from the forward’s strong mental fortitude, physicality and grit. He may not be the most talented footballer but gets what he sets out to, on the field of play. On his way to become a professional footballer, he always mashed up the goals and putting on record, some weird numbers. From 2004-06, Romelu scored 121 goals in 68 matches for Belgian Pro League club called Lierse before banging 131 goals in 93 matches for Anderlecht’s youth academy. He also became the fifth youngest player to reach 100 English Premier League goals and also one of only five players to have scored 50 premier league goals before their 23rd birthday.

An evolving footballer

The Belgian forward is one such a player we have seen add new dimensions to his game from time to time. Popularly known for having a bad first touch by fans who don’t like him the most, displays such as the ones narrated above of dummies and dribbling past players have recently become more established in Lukaku’s game. His physical strength that is often likened to that of an ox, pace and power together with bits of finishing “tools” learnt from Thierry Henry during his tenure as Belgium’s striker coach could surely, slowly lead him to emulate his boyhood hero, the Brazilian Ronaldo. The former “marksman” that Lukaku often watches on YouTube.

Belgian Legend

The Belgian striker of Congolese descent has become the Belgian legend at only 25 years of age. He has since surpassed the previously held record of all time record goals by a single player for the Red Devils which was 31. Lukaku has 45 record international goals to his name and still counting. He has represented his country at the 2014 world cup, Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia. Even money has since started following the forward, becoming the first English Premier League player to sign for Jay-Z’s management sports agency called Roc Nation Sports and also signed a record sponsorship deal with Puma, the largest endorsement deal the Germany company has over offered.

Mama, Romelu Menama Lukaku Bolingoli, made it!

FT English Premier League Preview: How will Aubameyang fair during a full EPL season?

Pierre Aubameyang will look to continue his excellent form with Arsenal FC this season.

Some call him Arsene Wenger’s gift to Unai Emery. Pierre Aubameyang was the last (mid-season) signing made by the Frenchman before he called time on his long career at Arsenal. There is a lot of hype around the forward and what he is capable of doing. I guess this comes naturally after he claimed Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry’s famous number 14 shirt. The question we try to answer here is how will he fair in a full English Premier League season as compared to other forwards.

The Gabonese international is a well-known predator in front of goal. He scored a total of 23 goals in 29 matches across all competitions in the 2017/18 season. This obviously includes his contribution in Germany before the turn of this year and his record-breaking start in the EPL for Arsenal. He was brought in with a huge pedigree because he managed to outscore some of the best strikers in the world like Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga. Now, he has moved to England for a new challenge.

The top goal scorer in the previous season was a fellow African, Mohamed Salah, of Egypt who scored 31 goals in 38 matches. Although he scored more than Pierre, the Arsenal man has a better shooting accuracy with 61% and also a better goals-per-match ratio with 0.77. Salah stands at 44% and 0.69 respectively. This on its own, proves that the Gabonese forward is a more efficient goalscorer than the person who lifted the Golden Boot accolade at the end of last season.

It is undoubtedly going to be interesting how Aubameyang will fair in a full season against other top goalscorers in the league including Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, the above mentioned Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku. The new Arsenal coach, Unai Emery, has been preaching about hard-work and is trying to find a new way for the team to play after being used to the tactics of Wenger for 22 years. The recent pre-season friendlies have shown that the team is becoming quicker in transition, which makes them deadlier on the counter. These tactics certainly suit a player of Aubameyang’s abilities whose pace is unquestionable. He managed to score a hattrick against Boreham Wood in a thumping 8-0 victory for the Arsenal. He managed to achieve all of this without the creative genius of Ozil and Mkhitaryan on the pitch. Just imagine how much more he can accomplish with those deadly passers of the ball on the pitch.

I think that Pierre will be a contender for the Golden Boot award in the English Premier League this season. He has already proved that he can do it in England, and can do it better than Salah so there should not be any reason to doubt his abilities in front of goal. However, there are some worries about his contribution in recent weeks after seeing that the new Arsenal coach is deploying the striker on one of the flanks. Against, Boreham Wood, he played on the left and against Atletico Madrid in the International Champions Cup, he was drifting to the right. This might limit his chances in front of goal and might affect his final standing as far as the top scorers' list is concerned. Who else will be the part of the attacking squad this season?

Romelu Lukaku is also in his second season with Manchester United and has adapted well to Jose Mourinho’s style of play. He scored 16 goals and provided 7 assists for the runners-up in the league. His position in the team is almost guaranteed as the club does not have another out-and-out striker to compete with him for his place in the squad. If he remains fit this season, he will certainly challenge Aubameyang to the top spot on the scoring charts.

Harry Kane is a proven goalscorer in the English Premier League. He has scored more goals in every season since the 2013/14 season. He was the top goal scorer for two years running before Salah came back to England. His Tottenham side is suited for a striker of his abilities and he will be sure to bang in goals. The Englishman seems to be more motivated by goals than trophies which makes him a threat to Aubameyang. He will give it his all to be the highest goalscorer in the league after managing to achieve this feat in the previous World Cup hosted by Russia.

Last but certainly not least. Sergio Kun Aguero. He plays for the defending champions, Manchester City, who won the league with 100 points last season. He scored a total of 21 goals in the league despite being dropped to the bench for Gabriel Jesus on a couple of occasions. Some pundits argued that he was the best finisher in the league, and rightly so, but that was before Salah and Aubameyang came onto the scene. Will he have enough to lift his first golden boot award since 2015?

Top Goal Scorer Predictions:

1. Aubameyang

2. Salah

3. Kane

4. Aguero

5. Lukaku

FT World Cup 2018: Tunisia goes down hard but they go down swinging

Tunisia are all but eliminated from the World Cup 2018 after a 5-2 defeat to Belgium.

Tunisia are all but eliminated from the World Cup 2018 after a 5-2 defeat to Belgium.

The odds really seem to be against the North African Les Aigles de Carthage in this tournament as they once again lost a game that they really needed to win to stay in the competition. Belgium did not just beat them, they scored more than double what Tunisia produced in an overwhelming 5-2 win. In case you are wondering how so much was accomplished, here is a snippet below.

Wahbi Khazri capitalized on the assist from Hamdi Nagguez and scored for Tunisia just before the referee blew the whistle. What a redemption for Tunisia! Earlier in the game, Dylan Bronn had taken a free kick from Saif-Eddine Khaoui which he then headed into the center of the net. Maybe this undesirable outcome can be accredited to the change of the players that started off the game from the Tunisian side. Farouk Ben Mustapha had to step in for the Tunisian goalkeeper who got injured during the game with England. Such a critical change during a desperate time is least likely going to yield good results in most cases, and this one happened to be one of them. Two of their players also had to exit the game before the end of the game, due to injury and this may have had an impact on the team too.

On the Belgium side, the drops of the victory started to pour in early into the game. Just after 6 minutes, a foul that worked in Belgium’s favor gave Eden Hazard a chance to capitalize with a penalty and he easily put the ball into the net while the Tunisian goalkeeper just knelt in front of the goal post. Lukaku was on fire too! Just before the teams adjourned for the first half, he had two goals under his belt for the Belgians. Even though he eventually left the game due to an injury, it did not stop the Red Devils from pouring in goals. Hazard and Batshuayi also each contributed one goal to the game which led to this incredible victory.

Tunisia needed to win this game, but we do not always get what we need. Tunisia will face Panama on Thursday, the 28th of June which might be their last game. As they pack their bags, they will say “we did not win the World Cup, but we participated and represented Africa in the World Cup!”

Manchester United through to the final after beating Tottenham 2-1

Will Tottenham ever learn from their mistakes?

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez scores against Tottenham in the FA Cup

Manchester United have done it again and are on the right path to prove that they are becoming a competitive team in England. The club have been struggling since Alex Ferguson left but Jose Mourinho has achieved instant success after taking over from Louis Van Gaal. The Portuguese manager won what he calls a treble in his first season i.e. FA Community Shield, Carabao Cup and the UEFA Europa League which gave them qualification to the UEFA Champions League. This season, he tried to catch up with the cash rich City side who invested a lot but could not push for a title challenge as everyone anticipated. The club also crashed out of the Carabao Cup this season before being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Sevilla in the quarterfinals. Mourinho’s man now only had their eyes on the FA Cup for a last chance to salvage some silverware to the club. They had enough to defeat their opponents today to make it to the final of the tournament but it was not easy.

Dele Alli opened the scoring for Tottenham on the 11th minute from a Christian Eriksen cross and it looked like it was going to be a defeat for the Red Devils but they had other thoughts. The winter signing scored the equalizer for United to make it 1-1 on 24 minutes after Paul Pogba outmuscled Dembele on the left before delivering a perfect cross for the Chilean forward to score. Jese Lingard wasted an opportunity to give United the lead three minutes later when he blazed over the goal from a cross by Lukaku only 3 minutes after Sanchez had scored. Dier also had an opportunity when he shot from distance and saw his effort hit the post. Lukaku then combined with Sanchez in a counter attack that saw the Spanish midfielder, Ander Herrera scoring the winning goal. This is such a disappointment for the Tottenham team who have been improving year on year. They really need to start winning trophies soon if they are to keep their top talent because they have come short on so many occasions. Kudos Mourinho and his team. On to the next one now.

Harry Kane trying to keep up with Salah

Mo Salah scores his 30th Premier League goal in Liverpool’s win against Bournemouth

Mo Salah scores his 30th Premier League goal in Liverpool’s win against Bournemouth

This season has seen the rise to stardom by an African player in the Premier League once again but this time by a player who had already failed to make the cut in this league before moving to Liverpool. You guessed right, Mo Salah has been in the limelight for the greater part of the season and has even gone ahead of the most clinical English striker in Harry Kane. The Tottenham forward had enjoyed the success of winning the Golden Boot twice in a roll before this season and was probably confident of pipping the usual front-runners in Aguero, Lukaku and probably a striker in Morata who had brought a huge hype when he moved to Stamford Bridge. Little did he know that he would be given a run for his money by an Egyptian winger who had failed to cement a first team spot when he was playing for Chelsea before leaving for Italy. This season, Harry Kane has been behind the Liverpool forward and he recently appealed for a goal in order to catch up with Salah. The Liverpool forward scored his 30th Premier League goal during last weekend and Kane had to wait for Tottenham’s game in hand played on Wednesday to also score a goal in a match that ended in a draw for the Spurs against Brighton & Hove Albion. There are only four games left to play and the Tottenham striker has vowed not to give up without a fight. Again we ask, will Kane have enough to pip his counterpart for his most prized asset? Ian Wright talks about Anthony Martial

Is Martial being hampered by Mourinho?

Manchester United winger Anthony Martial dribbles by Sevilla defender in UEFA Champions League

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright shares his thoughts on one of Manchester United’s players. Anthony Martial joined Manchester United back in 2015 from Monaco in a deal worth £36m. The player was an instant hit at the Old Trafford as Van Gaal trusted the player to lead the front and the then 19 year old managed to score 11 goals before being shifted to the left of the front three. Martial showed promise of being the go-to-man for the team in the post Ferguson era. Jose Mourinho took over the reigns in 2016 and he had different ideas. Mourinho had faith in other players like the emerging Rashford and Mata. This season, Jese Lingard has moved ahead of Martial in the pecking order and the addition of Alexis Sanchez in the winter transfer window proves that the player is not trusted to lead the attack by the coach. Martial has however, showed that he can deliver even as the centre forward as he scored a couple of goals in the absence of Romelu Lukaku. Wright believes that if United have to let one go between Martial and Rashford, then the Frenchman should be sacrificed. Craig Bellamy backed the former Arsenal legend in saying that he should be doing much more. Martial has the pace and the trickery to beat defenders but is not doing enough when asked to play out wide. Manchester City have done a good job with just as much quality in the front as United but somehow, the Red Devils have failed to make it work. United will not be willing to sell Martial to their rivals so it probably looks like the player would be looking for a move abroad. Do you think United owe Martial a little bit more than he is getting at the moment? Where do you want to see him playing next season? Leave your comments below.

Salah soldiers Liverpool on in the battle for EPL second

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane score in Liverpool win

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino celebrate a goal for Liverpool FC in the English Premier League

Based on his current form, Salah’s name being named on the score sheet is not a surprise to anyone who watches football. Goals have become a norm for the Egyptian who has reached 29 goals already in the EPL and is leading the race to the golden boot. This time however, he had to come to the rescue of Liverpool and snatch a late win against Crystal Palace. Just these dramatic instances are what brings joy to the eye as this level of competition had been missed after the short international break. Milivojevic scored the opener for Palace from the penalty spot after Karius brought down Wilfried Zaha in the 18 area. Hodgson’s side were off to a good start and kept the Merseysiders at bay for the most part of the match until Senegalese forward Sadio Mane scored the equalizer just after the restart. It was not easier for Liverpool after that as Christian Benteke missed two glorious chances to bring back the advantage to the home side. Crystal Palace were left to rue their missed chances late on in the match as top goalscorer, Mo Salah calmly finished past Hennessy on the 84th minute. Once again, the Egyptian’s goals have made the difference, confirmed the win for Liverpool and put pressure on Manchester United on the race for runners up.

United also ended up winning 2-0 in their match against Swansea. Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were on the score sheet and it was long overdue for the latter to contribute for the club in terms of goals.

Manchester United win 2-0 against Brighton

Manchester United through to next round of FA Cup

Criticism for the Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku has died down in recent weeks as the player has rediscovered his goalscoring touch and he contributed once again to Manchester United’s win on Saturday. It had been a quiet night for the team who were failing to break the Premier League side’s defense before Nemanja Matic found Lukaku with an inch perfect cross for the striker to nod home just before the break. That made it his 25th goal in his debut season at Manchester United. Mourinho’s men had enough time to add another one 7 minutes before time as Ashley Young’s freekick found Matic at the back post and the midfielder made no mistake as he scored the second to secure a 2-0 win against newly promoted Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup. Next up is the semifinals and the boys have to be at their best if they are to have a chance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Sevilla grinded out a 2-1 win to join Madrid in the UCL quarters

Sevilla and Roma book a seat in the last 8

A late show from Sevilla downed Manchester United who were below par on Tuesday night. Ben Yedder scored two goals in quick succession, one at the 74th and the other at the 77th minute to secure a comfortable 2 goal advantage before Romelu Lukaku scored for Jose Mourinho’s team on the 84th minute. This result can come as a shocker to a few, but those that followed the club during its Europa League campaigns should know that Sevilla are a well-disciplined team that can bring the game to you from the first minute till the final whistle. Manchester United have learned that the hard way as they have been knocked out of the competition which many hoped that Jose Mourinho would mount a challenge in. In other news, AS Roma also qualified into the last 8 teams in the tournament after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 thanks to an Edin Dzeko goal. This means that they have qualified on away goal’s rule having scored one goal in the first leg of the clash. That’s a wrap! The rest of the teams will be confirmed on Wednesday.
