Aubameyang vs Koulibaly: The fate of the furious

Napoli vs Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final will be treated as a final by both sides. Even more interesting will be the Wakanda battle between Aubameyang and Koulibaly. Check out who we think will emerge victorious?

For years, the UEFA Europa League has been counted as a second fiddle tournament with little to offer in terms of excitement to the biggest of European clubs. Gone are the days when the tournament was looked down upon and now the level of competition in different leagues has improved, forcing clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea and Napoli to participate in the tournament. The UEFA Europa League draw was held on Friday, 12 March, 2019 and it presented one of the biggest showdowns of the competition, let alone in Europe. Arsenal was matched up with Naples’ Napoli, a fixture that both teams were hoping to avoid. We look into it, focusing on the two best players from the two teams. Arsenal’s striker versus Napoli’s defender. It’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang versus Kalidou Koulibaly. Check this out.

If Aubameyang is the Black Panther, then Koulibaly has to be the Killmonger to the story because the battle boils down to these two. Who will take the throne when these two meet?
— Tinotenda Magiya, FirstTouch Africa

As expected, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is Arsenal’s top goal scorer at this stage of the season with 21 goals in all competitions with 4 being from the UEFA Europa League tournament. He has been used interchangeably with Alexandre Lacazette but still has the knack for goals and delivers under pressure. It is expected that he will bring his A game against the monstrous beast of a defender in Kalidou Koulibaly.

In the same vein, Koulibaly has been a leader from the back at the Naples club. Koulibaly is raking up an average of 4 clearances and 2.3 blocks per match in this competition. He will be looking to shutout the goal threat in the Gabonese International who is proving a nuisance to defenders in every league he goes to. This could be a true test for both.

Also, if you had not picked it up already, both players hail from the land of Africa. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang leads the frontline for Gabon while Koulibaly takes up defensive duties for Senegal. Both players will be looking to compete for a title as they warm up for this year's African Cup of Nations 2019 tournament to be held in Egypt. Amongst them, could be a possible African Player of the Year if they do well in both ties as well as putting in stellar performances in Africa's finest tournament. I wouldn't want to miss this.

Finally, their personalities are quite the opposite. They remind me of the debate about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. One is more quiet and less expressive on the pitch with the other taking pride in making headlines from controversial goal celebrations. Koulibaly is a more reserved guy who lets his defending do the talking. He is someone who easily stands out in a match with his presence and contribution in the first third of the pitch. Whereas, Aubameyang has some fine goals in his locker which he often celebrates with a front-flip or pulling out some super-hero mask. Recently, the Arsenal striker pulled out the mask of the Black Panther and celebrated his goal in wakanda-style. If Aubameyang is the Black Panther, then Koulibaly has to be the Killmonger to the story because the battle boils down to these two. Who will take the throne when these two meet?

I think Arsenal vs Napoli came too soon but it will be a great spectacle. Especially to see these two players go toe to toe against each other in their quest for titles. My bet is on Aubameyang. Where is yours?

Are Africans peaking in the English Premier League?

The African football stars all over the world in premium leagues such as the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and quite recently the Chinese Super League, have been usually, a part of the pack. It however seems like they are starting to lead the pack as far as the English Premier League is concerned.

The Egyptian King won the match ball after scoring a hatrick and gave away his Man Of The Watch Award to James Millner, who clocked 500 premier league appearances in the tie. Last season’s golden boot winner and first runners up to the FIFA Best Male Player of the Year award is finally silencing critics who labelled him a “one-time season wonder.”
— Dennis Takaendesa, FirstTouch Africa

We have had legendary African icons repping the continent in the world’s most watched club football league, the English Premier League. I am talking about the likes of Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, the tall striker in Nwanko Kanu and even the controversial Emmanuel Adebayor who represented both of the North London clubs in Arsenal and Tottenham. It’s easy to remember forwards, but they are not all of the Africans who played the game at the highest level. Do you remember Lauren? The Arsenal defender who owned the right wing of the famous “Invincibles” setup? More interestingly, now more than ever – it seems African players are reaching unprecedented levels. They are becoming the extra special toppings of the Premier League cake.

Over the weekend, we once again saw Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the line for the Arsenal. Before that, in midweek, the Gabonese captain had two delightful chances of extending his lead at the top of the scoring charts and required perhaps the world’s best goalkeeper to deny him twice after two wonderfully worked shots. Over the weekend, he was also not on the scoring sheet but put in a solid striker performance, eventually serving up the only assist of the match as Lucas Torreira scored the only goal of the game. Arsenal consequently stayed close to top four positions and did not fall out any further away from the leading title challengers in Liverpool and Manchester City. Which other African is evidencing this peak?

Mohamed Salah was back amongst the goals, plenty goals for that matter as Liverpool walked away 4-0 winners at difficult Bournemouth, moving above City to the top of the standings.

It’s not only the forwards that give us something to pride in but other players as well. For instance, Everton’s Idrissa Gueye is only second to Crystal Palace’s Wan Bissaka on tackles won this entire campaign. Twice as much as the likes of Arsenal’s heralded signing in Lucas Torreira or the FIFA World XI finalist in Ng’olo Kante. The Senegalese is still pretty much an underrated midfield gem.

Conclusively, just looking at the premier league scoring charts and seeing Aubameyang and Salah tied at the top with ten goals each just goes a long way in highlighting the immediate dominance of Africans in the English Premier League.

FT Sideline: Why has Aubameyang been so prolific?

The Gabonese captain has seamlessly switched to the Emirates stadium and has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most respected strikers. With 20 goals for Arsenal in 31 matches and joint EPL top scorer alongside Sergio Aguero this season, the numbers are starting to look like his Dortmund days. But what makes him tick?

There is no use trying to make a case why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of the best strikers in the world, simply because everyone knows and vehemently agree. It’s a better use of time exploring what makes him tick, with the hope that such attributes can be learned and passed down to future generations of African and global strikers at large.

It is know that modern strikers usually go through what is famously knowns as a “goal drought,” September used to be a boogey month for Harry Kane, Suarez is relatively going through a drought right now at Barcelona despite the impressive overall performances, Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku and the list goes on and on. The point is that the barren periods are almost part and parcel of a striker’s package. But, that’s not Aubameyang. The Gabonese captain has been scoring at least 30 goals a season since 2015 at Borussia Dortmund and before that, as a developing footballer in France and other places, he would hit at least half of the thirty goals. He was never an out and out striker to begin with, he just recently developed this goal scoring wit and has never looked back. But why is he immune to the droughts? Why is he so prolific?

Here are two simple reasons why:

1. Simplicity, the ultimate sophistication

It’s modern “wisdom” that a good striker should contribute to overall play of the team, tracking back to help with defensive duties on set pieces, holding up play, taking on defenders, laying up assists for teammates and many other things. Harry Kane is increasingly becoming a member of this bracket after criticism of “selfishness,” Alexandre Lacazette is Arsenal’s version of that “modern striker” and Suarez is not a stranger to such duties at Barcelona. Now, Auba is different. The 29 year-old knows how to score goals and fundamentally sticks to that. His dribbling game is not the best nor is his hold-up play. He usually goes “missing” when his team is on the ropes but at any moment, with the slightest of chances - he can ripple the net. The African striker’s winner over the weekend which bagged all three points for Arsenal resembles this attribute of coming out of nowhere to turn the tide in the favor of his colors. Joking with his teammate, Sead Kolasinac who was the assist provider on the day, Auba even posted on instagram about how he loves tap in goals. He is the kind of guy who does not clutter his game with a lot of “best practices” or “modern tactics” but does one thing well enough to dominate the rest. No wonder he is currently joint-top scorer with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero in the Premier League tied at 8 goals for the campaign. It’s this “one dimensional” play that has enabled him to reach 20 goals in 31 matches for the Gunners, quicker than the time Thierry Henry or legend Ian Wright took.

2. Lightning pace

Lightning and Auba usually go in the same sentence because he is that quick. EA Sports didn’t rate him the fastest play on FIFA 18 for no reason. It is this pace that aids him to latch on crosses the quickest and make a meal of no ingredients at all. Those tap in goes and numerous strikes inside the box, it’s never because defenders do not know what he will probably do, they just can’t catch him.

Conclusively, Arsenal look like they are more than sorted in their attack with Lacazette complimenting the Gabonese in numerous ways. They will however need to continuously learn to play to his strengths if they are going to get the most out of the Gabonese international.

FT Impact Player Series: The dynamic Mario Lemina, Gabon’s finest!

The former Juventus midfield found a new home at EPL’s Southampton. Because his club is relatively small, it has tended to narrow opinions about his contributions. The Gabonese international has the eye of the tiger in the midfield and a move away to a Champions League side or any other bigger club in Europe cannot be off the cards.

There is a myth about players that leave the big teams in Europe in search for first team opportunities. Often times, they are regarded as players who lack confidence, the cutting edge and the hunger that the best players in the world are supposed to have. In actual fact, these players realise that their development requires them playing regular football before reaching that level in which they are considered to be great players. For example, Arjen Robben left Real Madrid for Bayern Munich, Xhaqiri left Bayern Munich for Inter Milan, and Morata left Real Madrid for Chelsea. These are just examples of renowned players who are good footballers but left the biggest teams for lesser teams in search of first team opportunities. In this piece, we shift our attention to a former Juventus player that left the club for Southampton and has been pivotal to the English Premier League side ever since his move. Gabon international, Mario Lemina, is the man in question and here’s what he brings to the table.

Composure on the Ball

Mario Lemina is one of the most composed midfielders in world of soccer right now. The Gabon international has mastered the art of reading the game before making the simple pass. Basic football they call it, but it is not so basic when you look at other players who look rushed on the ball. If you were an admirer of the former Barcelona captain, Xavi, then you will love how the African midfielder carries his team forward whenever he has the ball. Lemina makes football look simple with the way he anchors the middle of the park in at Southampton. These are some of the things that cannot be quantified by numbers or stats. The 25-year old is a joy to watch for Southampton.

Defensive Duties

Playing in the English Premier League requires a little bit more than just the ability on the ball which the Gabon international has. Lemina is also a beast when it comes to defending. He averages 3.4 interceptions per 90 minutes so far in the five league games that he has played for the Saints. The young midfielder looks a steal for Southampton who prized him away from Juventus for just £18 million in 2017. Players with the ability to tackle and carefully clear the ball out of danger like Lemina are now going for around £45 million in the current transfer market, for instance Liverpool’s capture of Fabinho.

Flair & Trickery

Southampton is not one of the biggest teams in the English Premier League. The biggest teams usually have the best players and come down hard on the lesser teams. This means that the club is usually under a lot of pressure when they play teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City. It is in such matches that you need a player with the ability to dance his way out of danger and deliver the ball to the attackers. Lemina does just that. The midfielder’s trickery in the middle of the park can be likened to the Spanish, Santiago Cazorla who has the confidence of taking the ball deep in his own half and beat his markers on his way forward. There is not much difference between Lemina and Paul Pogba, who also made a name for himself in the hands of Juventus, save the fact that the latter plays for France. Okay, the comparisons may be above board, but I hope you get the point. Lemina is really good!

Killer Passes

Also, the primary role of the midfielder is to dictate play for the team. This requires having players with a wide passing range. Lemina is an asset for Southampton with his long range passes. In 90 minutes, he averages about three long balls which are delivered in dangerous areas for his team. Although he has just recorded one assist in the league, his creativity is unquestionable. Mario makes key passes for the Saints and he bosses a pass completion rate of 85.3%. With no disrespect to Southampton, these are numbers that can be massively improved when playing with players of better quality in teams like the ones mentioned above.

Question

He is still 25 years of age, that is the current prime age in soccer, do you he will probably land a bigger contract in a bigger club and make his name bigger? I think he will, Everton captured Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye at similar age and has gone to be one of the division’s best defensive midfielders.

Checkout Lemina’s style of play in the video below.

FT English Premier League Preview: Can Unai Emery Get Arsenal Back to Top 4

Replacing Arsene Wenger will not be an easy task, however, Unai Emery has won 10 trophies in the last 5 years, which is the most of any manager.

Unai Emery head coach of Arsenal interviews during the International Champions Cup match between Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain at the National Stadium on July 28, 2018 in Singapore. “Thananuwat Srirasant/Getty Images AsiaPac'“

Long-serving Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, ended his stay at the helm of the London club in May after leading the team for over 20 years. He pointed out that he did not want things to turn out as they did where the Arsenal fans were seen protesting in the stadiums and some flying planes over the pitch with quotes “#WengerOut” and “Thank you for the memories, but it is time to say goodbye”. The Emirates Stadium became hostile even for the Arsenal players who were bashed by the fans for ‘not being worthy to wear the shirt.’ All these challenges were faced by the club less than three months ago before the club appointed the new head coach, Unai Emery. His task is to make sure that all this does not happen and also make sure that the team performs on the pitch. Here’s how we think he will fair this season.

Since the fans were divided on their opinion over Wenger, the atmosphere created in the stadium did not help the players on the pitch. Now, with the appointment of Emery, we see the fans of Arsenal united once again behind the club, and they look like they are ready to back the manager in this post-Wenger era. The new boss has since thanked the fans for supporting him and asks them to be patient and help the team in the upcoming season. He promised them some entertaining football which is part of the identity of the club. By doing this, he has curbed any form of negativity which affected Arsenal’s performances on the pitch last season. This is an excellent step towards success.

Also, he is dealing away with some aspects of Wengerball which frustrated the fans in recent years. Arsenal was playing sideways passes whenever they ran out of ideas and Unai identified this problem before stepping into the big shoes left by the Arsenal legend. In the recent pre-season friendlies, we have already noticed some changes in the style of play as the club is trying out new things like putting the ball over the top which was hardly seen at the Emirates. New signing Matteo Guendouzi released Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang through on goal with a delightful lobbed pass, which the Gabonese forward subsequently failed to convert. Sead Kolasinac also did the same for Mkhitaryan in the match against Paris-Saint Germain, which the London club won 5-1. It is these passes that will cause havoc in the EPL and bring them more goals to the ones they scored last season.

Apart from that, Arsenal conceded the most goals (51) out of all the teams in the top 6 last season. They have had challenges with defending for quite some time now, and captain Koscielny’s injury does not make the situation better. However, Emery with the help of Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi, has invested in new defensive options through the purchases of Stephan Litchsteiner and Sokratis. These players have a defensive mindset and are ready to be physical as opposed to most of the Arsenal players who are very laid back and quoted by Troy Deeney as to be lacking ‘cojones’. The hope is for them to help stop the gaps at the back in the club’s search for a top 4 finish.

Unai Emery 2.jpg

Furthermore, coach Emery has introduced a new way of working at the club. He is seen taking the players for double training sessions and spending more time in the gym with them. He believes in having a squad full of players who work hard throughout the 90 minutes. This requires a lot of preparation, and he has been doing just that. When Arsenal played against Boreham Wood, there was a sense of urgency to get back the ball as soon as they lost it which is different from Wenger’s style. The Arsenal team was vulnerable when they lost possession of the ball and were prone to conceding on the counter. Now, they fight as a team to get the ball back before attacking. This style of play is encouraging to see for the Arsenal fans and has raised their hopes as the 2017/18 season draws near. For the first time in years, the Arsenal fans are optimistic that their team will perform well.

It seems as if the boss has identified the weaknesses of the squad and is working on improving them before the season starts. Do you think Arsenal will be ready to push for top 4 finish let alone mount a challenge for the title? Drop your comments below.

Arsenal win on Wenger’s last match

Arsenal’s striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang pictured before scoring his 10th English Premier League goal in Arsene Wenger’s last match for the club against Huddersfield at John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday, May 13, 2018, in West Yorkshire, England.

Arsenal’s long-reigning manager, Arsene Wenger, took charge of his last match as the boss on Sunday against Huddersfield away from home. The club had not collected a single point since the turn of the year and were looking to end on a more favorable note in the Frenchman’s last match. A strong line-up was announced for the away side which saw an attacking trio of Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Mkhitaryan lead the line ahead of Ramsey, Iwobi, and Granit Xhaka. Nerves were flying high for the Arsenal team who were out to prove a point that they have potential to be great again under the right tutelage of a competent manager. Huddersfield had a better start and looked to spoil the party for Wenger’s farewell celebrations as Tom Ince failed to bury home a cut-back from Alex Pritchard. As the match progressed, two planes flew over the stadium paying tribute to Arsene Wenger. One had the hashtag #OneArseneWenger and the other with a message, “Merci Arsene. We’ll miss you too.”

It was such an emotional match and the manager’s last signing ever, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang stole the show as he finished off an Aaron Ramsey pass on the 38th minute. The Gabon international was out to thank the manager for believing in him and allowing him the opportunity to test himself out in the English Premier League. This goal against Huddersfield means that Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has scored a total of 10 Premier League goals. The forward has already proved a gem for the team and the next manager would have to find ways to make him play against Lacazette because he can also create goals having assisted 4 since January. Arsenal resisted a couple of efforts from Huddersfield to grind out Arsene Wenger’s 716th win as well as picking up the club’s first points in 2018. It would have been better if he managed to win the UEFA Europa League this season but his team was eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the semifinals. We are grateful that he leaves the club with other memories such as winning the English Premier League in the 2001/02 season without losing a single match. Au revoir Arsene!

Aubameyang scores but Arsenal’s woes continue

Arsenal’s striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang celebrates after scoring his 9th English Premier League goal in Arsene Wenger’s penultimate match for the club against Leicester City at The King Power Stadium on Wednesday May 9, 2018 in Leicester, England.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in action for Arsenal FC against Leciester City FC in English Premier League

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been nothing short of spectacular since his move from Borussia Dortmund. The Gabon international has come to the English Premier League deemed the most competitive of them all and has already managed to score 9 goals and provide 4 assists in just 10 starts as according to WhoScored. The African player had already done the most in the Germany where he scored 21 goals in all competitions at club level. Combined, the Aubameyang has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season excluding the one goal he scored for his nation in an international friendly game. This deserves so much praise for a player who joined a team in the middle of the season just like some international players like Alexis Sanchez but has still managed to outscore them. Of those goals, one of them came from today’s match between Arsenal and Leicester City.

Iheanacho opened the scoring in the 14th minute. The Nigerian international has not been in the best of form this season unlike his fellow African counterpart Aubameyang as this is only his second goal in the league. Iheanacho was dangerous on the night though as he was clean through on goal before being brought down by young Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Greek defender was shown a red card and Arsenal were short. Arsenal held on until Aubameyang came to the rescue and score in the 53rd minute. Arsenal was level on matters and was looking to pull a comeback but their hopes were shattered by Jamie Vardy’s penalty who scored after Grey was brought down in the box by Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Another African player claimed a stake from the match between the two teams. Algerian born winger Riyad Mahrez scored the 3rd and final goal for Leicester to seal their 3-1 win against Arsenal. Arsenal have not won a single point this year away from home which can be a mental challenge for the players that the incoming Arsenal coach has to deal with in the new season. Wenger has one final chance to win on a note and win points away from in their match against Huddersfield on the 13th of May.

Bouna Sarr refuses to represent Senegal at the FIFA World Cup 2018

Other prestigious African players who have represented other nations

Marseille player Bouna Sarr declines to play in the 2018 Russia World Cup and chooses to play for France instead of Senegal

Bouna Sarr is a defender who plays for Marseille in the French Ligue 1. He is a son of a Senegalese father and a Guinea mother who was born in France in 1992. The player has never represented a national team in his whole career, and is now 26 years of age. He got an opportunity of a lifetime to go and play at the FIFA World Cup this year in Russia, an opportunity that some of the greatest legends in football like Ryan Giggs never got until they retired. However, this did not prevent him for declining the chance to represent Senegal. He said, “It’s France and nothing else, nothing else is a big word, but I always dreamed of playing for the French team.”

This is not the first time that the player has declined the opportunity to play for an African team. He once also rejected to play for Guinea in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations saying that, “I’m French, I was born here I only have an attraction for the Blues.” Current Arsenal player, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang was also born in Laval, France but chose to represent the nation of his parents in Gabon. How odd is that?

Bouna Sarr is not the first player to reject the chance to represent African teams. In fact, there are so many other players in the past, some are even football legends, who chose to play for other nations like France, Italy and Portugal, even though they either were of African descent or they were born in the motherland. Let’s take a look at some of these players.

Arsenal and France legend Patrick Viera could have played in the World Cup with Senegal

Firstly, the English Premier League was graced with a fantastic player in Patrick Vieira who played and captained Arsenal for many years. He was part of the famous ‘Invincible’ squad that went the whole season without losing a single match. He is also a World Cup winner with France having lifted the trophy in 1998. But did you know that he was born in Dakar, Senegal? Patrick began his career at Cannes in 1994 after his family moved from Dreux when he was eight years old. His surname, Vieira, is Portuguese and is the maiden name of his mother who also hails from Cape Verde. African blood in his veins and also born in Africa, but he chose to represent France because of reasons unknown. What we appreciate is his contribution to the game and creating a legacy where new players who play in a similar position are dubbed ‘the new Patrick Vieira’. Imagine what could have been had he represented the Senegalese nation?

Portugal and Lazio winger Luis Nani will be looking to have a strong 2018 World Cup in Russia

Cristiano Ronaldo is the face of the Portuguese nation. Hold your horses there! We are not saying he is African, but…he shares the dressing room with someone from Africa. There was once a time when Manchester United produced a talent that looked like he was capable of equaling the player’s greatness. Louis Nani is the name of the player in question who was a promise but eventually failed to leave up to the hype. He, much like Ronaldo, represents the Portuguese nation and was part of the squad that lifted Portugal’s first major title in the UEFA Euro 2016. What most people might not know is the fact that the player is descendent from a small but beautiful island in Africa. Cape Verde is one of the tourist destinations in the continent with numerous beaches and has traditional morna music that Nani is familiar with because of his parents. There are some reports that he was born in Praia, Cape Verde but chose to represent Portugal and his decision is arguably justified after playing a part in the history-making Euros 2016.

Ghana-born stiker Mario Balotelli who plays for Italy and OG Nice in Ligue 1

Also, Super Mario is another player of African descent who chose to represent Italy instead of Ghana. Of course, we do not mean the game. Mario Balotelli, a striker that has represented clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Nice, is a son of Ghanaian parents. He was approached by the African team to represent them in 2008, but he refused because he was waiting for Italy to give him the nod. It is entirely a surprise why he is someone of questionable behaviour considering the way African parents discipline their kids. Mario is a wild card that has given headaches to his managers, Mourinho and Mancini because of his unpredictable behaviour. He is capable of skipping practice sessions without any reason, start a fight with teammates or even try some of the silliest things on the football pitch like doing a 360 turn alone when he is through on goal. The player is currently on a forced sabbatical from the national team after being exiled by the former Italy boss, Ventura who thought the player disrupted the camp.

Some so many players represented European sides. Some names worth mentioning include Zinedine Zidane (the current Real Madrid coach) of Algerian descent, Makelele born in Congo, N’golo Kante from Mali etc. Who else can you think of that we could have mentioned?

Abroad: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on why he is the “batman”

Gabonese forward, Pierre, has revealed why he has and would from time to time continue wearing superhero masks on the field of play. Speaking to Arsenal Player, the forward, who joined the North London club in January commented on the first incident where he was caught in the act:

Pierre Aubameyang in action for Arsenal FC in English Premier League

“The very first time I put a mask on, it was Spiderman when I was at Saint-Etienne, it was a tribute to a goalkeeper at the club, Jeremie Janot. When I was younger he came out onto the pitch in the full Spiderman suit and played in goal. It was crazy! On his birthday, I put the mask on to celebrate that.” - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The 28-year old is clearly more than just about stylish haircuts, summersaults or bags full of goals, he has a father’s heart:

“The second time, it was my son's birthday, when I was playing for Dortmund. I did Batman and Robin with Marco Reus against Schalke in the derby.” - The “Batman”

In his eight Premier League appearances for the Gunners, the Gabonese has scored six times and registered three assists. And for all the Arsenal fans who have crying out for some swag, there is more to come:

“There are others [for fans to see], for sure. Don't worry about that! Of course, after a few goals, I'll share some nice celebrations with the fans." - P.E Aubameyang

Liverpool hit 5 past Watford

Salah at it again!

Excellence personified. Mo Salah was at his best when Liverpool faced a Watford side that was still wounded from a 3-0 loss against Arsenal not so long ago. The Egyptian was ready to make the show his as he scored 4 goals and assisted the other for Roberto Firmino. This means that he is at 28 goals in the EPL, four ahead of the injured Harry Kane and is tipped to edge out the rest in the homestretch. Some have started comparisons between the player and the Argentine great, Lionel Messi but his coach, Jurgen Klopp, thinks that it is too soon to mention such names that have done it for 20 years. He however, mentioned that he believes that his player is on his way to be considered one of the best footballers in the world if he keeps his head down and do what he does best which is scoring goals. The race to be the best in the African continent is already finished with his closest competitor Aubameyang of Gabon also joining the Premier League in January but failing to keep up with Salah’s stats. Is Salah there yet? Tell us what you think.

The batman, Aubameyang is in predatory mode

The Arsenal forward is hungry to play more games and score more goals for his new club. The UEFA cup-tied rule that impedes him to participate in the Gunners’ Europa League campaign because he played champions league football for Borussia Dortmund, is a cause for frustration for the Gabonese international. He is having a relatively strong start to life in London, scoring 3 goals in 5 matches for the club and more than eager to add to his tally.

"I am really frustrated because the rules are a bit... I don't know how to say in English but I am disappointed because I can't help my team," Aubameyang told British media.

Pierre will be watching from the stands on Thursday as Arsenal face AC Milan in a second leg match of the Europa League round of 16.

EPL Roundup Matchday 30

A gameweek not short on goals

pierre emerick aubameyang6.jpg

Gabonese striker, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang continues to lead the charge in the revitalised Arsenal side which had been lacking confidence recently. He scored away against Brighton in the Gunners’ 2-1 loss and added to his tally yesterday in emphatic style. The Batman, quickly latched on to Mkhitaryan’s silky pass and rounded the goalkeeper before finding the back of the net, capping off with an acrobatic celebration. He later on assisted the Armenian for Arsenal’s third goal. Elsewhere, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez did what he does best for Leicester - assist and score goals. The Manchester City transfer saga seems to be behind him now. Riyad and Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored his first EPL goal for the Foxes, were both on the scoresheet as Leicester embarrassed bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion, 4-1. Serge Aurier also grabbed a goal in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Bournemouth together fellow Ivorian, Eric Bailly who returned to Man United’s starting line up. Bailly stopped Salah from scoring a goal for the first time in eight starts for Liverpool but couldn’t help but finish off Sadio Mane’s cross into his own net.
