2000’s Top News Stories of the Decade

We have come to the end. Not just to the end of a transformative soccer year, 2019, but to the end of a decade. And wow, it has been something.

The 2010s brought indescribable joy and unspeakable agony, probably more of both than any decade before. Their World Cup finals brought extra-time winners, two American titles, and a hat trick for the ages. Their Champions Leagues brought historic comebacks, unforgettable bicycle kicks, and four finals decided after the 88th minute.

They brought engaging narratives and captivating feats and swan songs. But most importantly they brought us iconic moments. Euphoric moments and brutal ones, but most of all incredible memories. So many that we couldn’t resist trying to rank them.

Without any further ado…to the top 10 iconic soccer moments of the 2010s, in descending order.

(Not so random disclaimer: We only considered on-field moments – so FBI raids and presidential resignations won’t be seen on our list. And we considered them from the perspective of the evolving soccer fan so they come off a bit vague, we know. Don’t hold back in the comments, let us have it.)

2010: Iniesta’s World Cup winner

From a global perspective, an extra-time World Cup-winning goal – one full of quality, too – belongs in the top five. But for fans with no emotional connection to Spain, Iniesta’s golden moment may not hit the same.

15 years from now though, Andres Iniesta’s strike to put Spain 1-0 up on the Netherlands in the 116th minute of the 2010 World Cup final will persist. It’s the one that kids will recreate in backyards. Its impact – clinching Spain a first world title – is forever etched into the era for Spain that will be remembered as Golden. It also solidified Iniesta as a legend.

2011: Rapinoe to Wambach

The toughest thing about back to back titles is determining which championship mattered more. Thirteen months after Donovan’s moment, the U.S. women found themselves in a similar situation: Down a goal, in stoppage time, with yet another World Cup flop staring them in the face. This was epitomized in ESPN’s Ian Darke’s laboured tone. “And it will go down as the USA’s worst performance ever in a Women’s World Cup.”

But then almost out of nowhere, Ali Krieger cut out a pass, Carli Lloyd fought through fatigue and cycled the ball left to Megan Rapinoe. With the U.S. players running on empty, the seemingly impossible became possible.

Eight-plus years later, the entire play still seems so absurd. Watching Rapinoe’s cross in mid-flight, you can almost see when the opportunity shifts from hopeful to perfection.

The Americans then won on penalties. The following weekend, they fell to Japan. But this moment helped re-launch women’s soccer. It enabled explosions of interest around 2015 and 2019. Can you trace most of the USWNT’s decade-long popularity back to July 10, 2011? We think so.

2012: Zambia wins AFCON 2012

2012 was a tough year to select for, but when Zambia beat the Ivory Coast on February 12 2012, in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, it meant redemption for a football team and a nation. It also gave football one of its greatest ever stories. For Zambia, though, there was a bittersweet joy, a sense of having done something that transcended sport.  It was a fairytale triumph for the team, who returned to Gabon 19 years after the plane crash which claimed the lives of the team's coach and 18 members of their squad.

2013: Football Says Goodbye to Sir Alex

United would get their own back on City the following season, and it would be the 13th and final Premier League title won by their legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

On 8 May 2013, Ferguson announced he would be retiring from the game at the age of 71. The Scot bowed out having won a staggering 38 trophies during his 27 years in charge at Old Trafford, more than any other manager in the history of the game.

The following day, David Moyes was appointed as Ferguson’s hand-picked successor. The less said about his 10 months in charge of United, the better. Sir Alex’s influence has only compounded in his absence as Manchester United, for all of their lore and prestige, look unrecognizable in the current hierarchy of club football. At least he still cheers them on from the crowd right?

2014: 7-1

The night of July 8, 2014, was less a moment, more a mood. It was an image that developed over two hours but has since remained in the minds of football fans. “7-1.” Even Google knows the significance of the scoreline. Go ahead, type them into the search bar. Let me know what you first result is?

The first of two World Cup semifinals that summer was humiliating and devastating for Brazil, a country who still is seen as the measuring stick of international soccer. But in one of the country’s worst moments, its world-class footballers looked paralyzed by the moment, by expectations, by the weight of a country on their shoulders. As they unravelled, on live TV with the world watching, we were left to wonder whether the team understood the unshakable grief they’d be responsible for.

You may not remember any of the seven goals. But you’ll remember where you were, the faces you saw, and the sheer disbelief in Brazil capitulating on the world stage.

2015: Carli Lloyd from midfield

In 2015 There was nothing dramatic about the USWNT’s return to the top of the women’s soccer world. They scored inside three minutes, and again inside five. By the time Carli Lloyd took a forward touch in midfield, they were 3-0 up and cruising.

But what Lloyd did next was, and forever will be, iconic. To cap a stunning 15-minute hat trick, from smack-dab in the middle of the centre circle, her strike was honestly a little disrespectful. The audacity.

Dare. To. Shine.

2016: Leicester City’s PL Title

Before the season began, bookmakers offered odds of 5,000–1 on Leicester winning the title. Once in a lifetime stuff. In the summer of 2015, Leicester City hired Claudio Ranieri to replace Nigel Pearson as their new manager and many pundits figured the Italian would struggle to keep the club in the first division.

But the Foxes made an excellent start to the season, spearheaded by striker Jamie Vardy, who scored 13 goals over 11 consecutive matches from August to November, breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Premier League record of scoring in 10 consecutive games.

Despite having been bottom of the league exactly 12 months prior, Leicester topped the table on Christmas Day in 2016 and while the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur struggled with consistency, Ranieri’s men pressed on in second half of the season.

Leicester officially became the sixth club to win the Premier League following a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham on 2 May 2016 and the trophy was lifted at the King Power Stadium a few days later.

2017 Part 1: Messi at the Bernabeu

No end-of-decade list would be complete without the GOAT, Lionel Messi. Constantly breaking records and boggling minds, Messi has won 23 club trophies and a record 6 Ballon d’Ors to date.

But besides all of his other record-breaking moments, the one that best encapsulated Messi’s brilliance happened on April 23, 2017. Barcelona and Real Madrid were deadlocked at 2-2 after a gritty and embattled 90 minutes of Classico football. It was a must-win for Barca in order to stay in the title race. Sergi Roberto skipped past Marcelo in midfield and passed the ball left. And as everybody’s eyes went with the ball, Messi performed his favorite magic trick. The greatest footballer on the planet made himself invisible, ghosting towards the top of the box and put Madrid to the sword just when they thought they had taken points from Barca.

Arguably more iconic was what he did next. Holding the “MESSI 10” side of his jersey up to a stunned Santiago Bernabeu crowd, and entire footballing world, Messi was flexing and we were all here for it. We are still here for it. And so were the Madrid fans, who couldn’t help but applaud.

2017 Part 2: La Remontada

On February 14, 2017, the decade’s most prolific club was exposed in front of Europe and beaten 4-0 on what felt like a consequential Champions League knockout night in Paris. Turns out the rumours of Barca’s demise were greatly exaggerated. 

With three minutes plus added time remaining in the return leg back in Spain, Barca trailed PSG 5-3 on aggregate and by an away goal. And just when you thought they were even more dead than they’d been in February, Neymar dazzled. Suarez embellished, and Sergi Roberto, a Catalan boy who’d joined the club at 14, provided one of the most iconic moments in recent Camp Nou history to complete a 6-1 victory, the biggest, most breathtaking, most dramatic European comeback ever.

Since it was only the Round of 16, and Barcelona limped out of the competition in the quarters after losing to Juventus, this only ranks at number 9 for us.

2018: Gareth Bale on his bike

“Wales. Golf. Madrid. Bicycle Kicks. In that order.” Gareth Bale’s decade, a majority of which was spent at Real Madrid has been polarizing, to say the least. Observing his current standing with Coach Zidane and the Merengues, you’d almost forget that Bale has arguably been Madrid’s most decisive player of the decade after the club’s all-time goat Cristiano Ronaldo.

Especially when you consider that Bale won two Champions League finals for the competition’s perennial winners. He put crosstown rivals Atletico to the sword with a 110th-minute header in 2014. Then, in 2018, to solidify the Threepeat – and four European crowns in five years for Real – Bale scored a goal that might just be the decade’s best.

Since this goal wasn’t as dramatic as many of the other moments on our list. And because Real fans never quite treasured it properly, we have Bale’s Bike coming in at number 10.

2019: Liverpool refuse to give up against Barcelona

The most recent memory on this list, we all remember Liverpool going into the second leg of their 2019 Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona 3-0. Down from the first leg and their chances of making it to a second successive final looked extremely unlikely to say the least.

Adding insult to literal injury, Mohamed Salah would miss the game through injury, ensuring that there was no chance for Jürgen Klopp’s side to stage a comeback. But the Reds showed that night what can happen if you refuse to give up hope.

The young club legend Divock Origi got the ball rolling when he made it 3-1 on aggregate after just seven minutes and that was how it stayed until half-time. Georginio Wijnaldum stunned Barça with a quickfire double to level the tie shortly after the interval.

Liverpool knew that it would have been quiet for them if they conceded an away goal but kept pushing. Their fairytale comeback was complete when unlikely hero Origi converted following a now-classic Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery, and boom, 4-0.

Anfield has witnessed some truly magical European nights over the years but this one was definitely top.

Liverpool went on to clinch a sixth Champions League after overcoming a Tottenham side in the final who’d pulled off a pretty stunning comeback of their own in the semi-final.

Post-Ronaldo Real Madrid: Can they compete?

The 2018/19 season commenced less than a month ago and the departure of Real Madrid’s greatest ever goalscorer made the headlines. Not many expected the player to leave the club that he claims to love, but who could blame him if he was not feeling wanted anymore. The Portuguese star averaged at least 40 goals per season since 2009 when he moved to the club from Manchester United and has been the focal point of the club’s successes in the past decade. He picked up 5 Ballon D’Or (World’s Best Soccer Player) Awards in his career to date which is the same as fellow GOAT, Lionel Messi of Barcelona. Tinotenda Magiya writes how Real Madrid plans to cope with the loss of their greatest asset.

Gareth Bale seems to be the answer to many questions. The Welsh forward was brought to Madrid in a world record transfer from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2013. It is only when he arrived that the club managed to win the UEFA Champions League after 9 failed attempts. Bale was brought with the expectation to rival Ronaldo for the best player within the camp and ensure that healthy competition translated to trophies. It is fair to say that the Galactico signing has not quite lived up to those expectations as he suffered many injuries throughout his time in Spain. Instead of scoring those huge number of goals, Bale was turned into a provider for the Portuguese No.7 because the team was built around him. His goal scoring contribution was a bit limited which saw his pedigree fall from being one of the best players in the world to being an impact substitute under Zinedine Zidane’s tenure. Ronaldo’s departure means that the player is granted the freedom he always desired, and he has since scored 3 goals and provided 1 assist in just 3 appearances so far this term. If the Spanish giants put their faith in the Welsh wizard, they will surely get the best out of the player who has that fear factor that can only be found in the best attackers in world football.  

Benzema is another player whose style of play suffered for the good of Ronaldo. The striker also focused more on assisting Ronaldo than doing his primary job which is to put the ball into the net. Opta Stats reported in April that he assisted Ronaldo’s 23 goals in La Liga, more than any other player. No wonder Ronaldo did not object to Higuain’s departure because Benzema was unselfish and was always ready to feed him the ball in dangerous positions and allow him to shine. Now that Ronaldo is gone, the French striker is also looking like a more effective player ready to compete for the Golden Boot (highest goal scorer) award. He looks potent in front of goal and does not think twice when the ball falls at his feet. He has scored 4 goals already in La Liga and another in the UEFA Super Cup to make it 5 goals in 4 appearances. Real Madrid will need these goals if they are to compete against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the domestic titles as well as to defend their European crown. There is more to come from the 30-year-old, and his style of play has been restored to default settings.

Real Madrid head coach, Lopetegui, is certain that his youthful talent will play an integral part in their quest for success during his tenure. He has since deposed the young Vinicius Jnr on the left of an attacking three for the La Liga opener before playing Marco Asensio and Isco Alarcon in the other two matches. The club has maintained a perfect record since the start of the competition and does not look like they miss Ronaldo. It is not the first time that the young players have delivered for Real Madrid. Even during Zidane’s time, Asensio shined against Barcelona in 2017 when they beat the Catalonians by 2 goals to nothing in the Spanish Super Cup. Gerard Pique of Barcelona was quoted as having said, “I feel inferior to Real Madrid for the first time,” and Ronaldo was not on the pitch on this night. There were signs that the club could live without the aging striker and the new coach has gone with that strategy. Dani Ceballos has also been used in midfield in place of the UEFA Best Player of the Year, Luka Modric who is turning 33 years in a few days. On other parts of the pitch, the club also acquired Mariano Diaz to provide competition for Benzema up front and Odriozola to compete with Dani Carvajal at right back. The club’s latest recruitment strategy could prove to be a masterstroke if they go on to win the La Liga trophy this season.

Besides, Courtois signature fits into the plan of making a competitive team post the Ronaldo era at Real Madrid. The club finished third behind Atletico Madrid and Barcelona conceding 44 goals in the process. This was twice as many goals that Atletico conceded and the club sought the expertise of the Belgian goalkeeper to prevent conceding so many goals. If the above-mentioned players maintain their current form and Courtois shields the goal-line like he knows how to, Real Madrid will definitely be a force to reckon this season and beyond.

In essence, Real Madrid does not look doomed now that they have lost a player who is arguably the greatest of all time. The status of the club does not allow it. Real Madrid has existed since 1902 and is the most decorated club in European soccer with 13 UEFA Champions League trophies. They managed to achieve this over many generations even when they lost players like Di Stefano, the Brazilian Ronaldo, Raul, Casillas, and now Cristiano Ronaldo. They seem to always find a way to exist and dominate. They have, and always will. Be sure to hold your heart in your hands when your team is matched against Real Madrid because they will have enough to deal with anyone they face.

Bale scores in a 2-1 win for Madrid against Leganes

In the wake of the 2-1 win against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Zinedine Zidane made the decision that he would rest his star players in the coming weekend to make sure that they are at their best when they play the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid faced Leganes on Saturday and the boss lined up a much-changed squad that saw players like Llorente, Ceballos, Borja Mayoral, Achraf, Vallejo and Theo Hernandez all getting starts alongside Gareth Bale, who has been rumored to be out of favor at the club. The Welshman scored the opener on the 8th minute after Karim Benzema’s shot was blocked by a defender before falling in the path of Bale who volleyed the ball past Cuellar who could not help but watch the ball pass between his legs and into the net.

Much like the Los Blancos, we have seen all season in La Liga, a lapse in concentration was bound to happen. The first came through Miguel Angel Guerrero and he failed to convert a cross-come-shot into the net as he tried a fancy flick. Nordin Amrabat also found space and hit a shot that beat Casilla in goal but could only hit the crossbar before it whiskered away into the stands. Borja Mayoral Moya then scored the second for Real Madrid in the 45th minute from a cross by Mateo Kovacic on the left.

Leganes found a consolation Darko Brasanac in the 66th minute who was assisted by Amrabat after he comfortably beat Theo Hernandez before sliding into the unmarked player. 10 changes but still Real Madrid manage to win. This means that they are 1 point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid and 12 behind Barcelona in first place.  

Real Madrid win 2-1 against Bayern Munich in the semifinals first leg

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane shocked the audience as he omitted Gareth Bale, Asensio and Benzema from his starting XI to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. It is not the first time that he has made these kind of changes but it had become quite predictable that he usually picked a pair of Vazquez and Asensio or Benzema with Bale but today he shacked things up a bit. Luka Modric retained his place even after a poor show in the quarterfinals against Juventus and he wanted to prove himself again.

The match kicked off and Bayern were unfortunate to lose Arjen Robben to injury in just the 5th minute of the match. He was replaced by Thiago and Bayern started to dominate Madrid in possession. It was not long before Jerome Boateng pulled a hamstring when he tried to reach for a ball that was also being contested by Marcelo. He left the pitch which disheartened the Bayern Munich fans before being replaced by Sule. It was sad to lose another first team player after the absence of Alaba, Coman, Neuer, and Robben who could not finish the game. However, this did not stop them from giving their best and they managed to score the opener in the 28th minute. Marcelo had gone on the attack which failed to produce the goal and Bayern Munich capitalized on his absence. The ball found its way to James Rodriguez who is on-loan from Real Madrid and he slid a defense-splitting pass to Joshua Kimmich. The youngster pushed the ball and looked like he was going to cross for either Lewandowski or Ribery on the far corner before taking a vicious shot that flew past Navas. The Real Madrid goalkeeper should have done better after being beaten on the near post and his weak attempt saw him touch the ball before going into the net.

The game was really end to end before Vazquez crossed the ball into the box for Ronaldo. The striker looked like he was going to repeat that overhead strike against Juventus but he probably saw that the ball was far behind him so he instead left the ball for his teammate Marcelo who connect the ball on the half-volley and it went straight to the bottom right corner. 1-1 at the Allianz Arena on the 44th minute was not what they were expecting and Bayern started to push on. They saw a couple of chances missed by Lewandowski and Muller before the referee blew for half-time. Asensio came on in the second half and he combined well with Vazquez on the break before being released to chip the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper. Asensio made it 2-1 to Real Madrid and the Los Blancos go into the second leg at home with an away goal advantage.

Real Madrid through to the semis

Real Madrid went into the match with a 3-0 advantage inspired by Ronaldo’s brace in the first leg. That was then, Mandzukic came into the match and scored in the 2nd minute just as Salah did last night. Juventus were out for blood in the Bernabeu and were pushing for more. Real Madrid had their fair chances as well even though a couple of them were ruled offside and the rest were saved by Buffon. The Old Ladies seemed to have the perfect recipe for success as they score the second through Mandzukic again. Real Madrid clearly missed a force in Ramos at the back as the defence looked disorganized and failed to deal with their opponents’ play. Zidane made big calls at half time as he replaced Gareth Bale with Vazquez and removed Casemiro for Asensio. Still, Juventus had the upper hand. Navas was forced to make a save from Higuain’s effort from 20 yards after the player took a shot on the half-turn. The match was intense and saw more than 7 yellow cards being flashed by Michael Oliver who was officiating on the night. Douglas Costa then crossed the ball from the right and Navas looked to have saved the ball before it slipped through his hands and it bounced off Matuidi’s knee and into the net. 3-0 it was and Real Madrid were nervous. Zidane made his final call from the bench and replaced Modric with Kovacic in a match that looked to be heading for extra-time. Little did we know that a big decision would be made by Michael Oliver as he pointed to the spot when Vazquez looked to be pushed by Benatia in the box. The game paused for a while as Juventus players took 3 minutes of the time, protesting at the decision which resulted in a red card being flashed at Buffon. So much for the final bow for the player who is rumored to be retiring at the end of this season. Eventually, the big man had to step over it and finish Juventus off. Ronaldo’s penalty hit the back of the net in the top right corner and Szczęsny  (the backup goalkeeper) guessed right but he could not stop the effort. 3-1 it ended and Real Madrid are through to the semifinals. This goal makes it 10 for Ronaldo against Juventus which means that he is the highest goalscorer against a single team in the history of the UEFA Champions League. Lionel Messi is just behind with 9 goals against Arsenal. Do you think Real Madrid deserved to go through?

Madrid derby ends in a draw

Not much was expected in this Madrid derby as both teams have almost conceded the La Liga title to Barcelona who lead the table with 79 points and Real Madrid with 64 points after the derby match. There was little fight in the teams to make the derby interesting as both teams have their eyes set on their second leg clashes in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. Nonetheless, Zidane called on Ronaldo to start the match in a much rested squad that saw players like Mateo Kovacic, Bale and Vazquez make the first 11. Both teams looked off and the match did not really feel like the derby as the levels of intensity was a little bit lower than expected. The first half reflected the poor energy levels of both teams and it is no surprise that it was goalless. Cristiano Ronaldo then scored for Real Madrid on the 53rd minute. The Portuguese forward scored a volley from a Gareth Bale cross that found him at the far post. This goal means that Ronaldo has scored 24 goals in his last 15 matches. What a turnaround in form for a player who was starting to be regarded as finished. His celebrations were shortened as Antoine Griezmann scored for Atletico just 4 minutes later. Ronaldo was taken off by Zidane who did not want to his star man to get injured in a match that was not as important as it should be. Both teams found opportunities to win it as Varane’s effort and Ramos’ freekick was clawed out by Oblak while Costa also saw his shots saved by Navas. This result means that Barcelona have edged closer to winning the La Liga title with a 11 point advantage with just 7 games remaining. It’s all in your hands Barca.

Real Madrid want to sell Gareth Bale in the summer as according to Guillem Balague

Pictured in the shadows is Real Madrid’s most expensive player who is of Welsh origins. Gareth Bale joined Madrid from Tottenham in a deal worth £85.3m. He made an instant impact in his first season by helping Real Madrid win the La Decima (10th UEFA Champions League) in 2014. He has since been plagued by injuries including his calf which has recurred for many years. This season he has been a bit part player and has often been called off the bench to see through matches with his direct runs. Bale has basically been replaced by Spanish wonderkid Asensio, Isco and Vazquez have been preferred ahead of him. Questions are raised towards his future because his lightning pace does not seem as that much of an asset the club needed when they brought him in.

In all fairness, Bale is a threat when he is fully fit but the problem with him is that he has become injury prone. His fitness concerns do not add value to a big club like Madrid who invested a lot in him which has led to their decision to sell him in the summer as according to Guillem Balague. The Spanish football expert says that the winger is edging closer to a Premier League return after falling down in the pecking order in Zidane’s team. English teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City have the finances to carry out this deal and will be on alert. Some rumors of a move to Bayern have also surfaced and this could be a more sensible move for the Welshman as he will be a long-term replacement for the aging Arjen Robben on the right. However, it is a doubt that Bayern would fork out hundreds of millions of pounds on a player like him. We just have to wait and see what the summer brings.
