2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Zambia out, Mauritania in, Ghana revived & complete round-up

Perhaps the biggest piece of news coming out from the 2019 AFCON qualifiers matchday 5 is that the 2012 champions, Zambia, are out of contention. But there is more, a whole lot more.

Morocco 2 - 0 Cameroon

The Lions of the Atlas tamed the Indomitable Lions in Casablanca courtesy of two super goals by the inform, Hakim Ziyech. Firstly from the penalty spot and then a super sweeper shot from outside the box to once again beat his Ajax Amsterdam teammate, Andre Onana. Even before the victory, Morocco had joined Cameroon among the list of the qualified teams after Comoros beat Malawi 2-1.

Mauritania 2 - 1 Botswana

Madagascar will not be the only debutants at the June 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals scheduled to take place in Cameroon. The high flying Al-Murabitun secured their first ever qualification in AFCON history after dismissing the Zebras of Botswana. The 2013 finalists, Burkina Faso and Angola will have to battle it out for the next qualification place in the group, counting on favors from others.

Mozambique 1 - 0 Zambia

Chipolopolo’s worst nightmare invited itself into their home as the 2012 Champions bowed out of the tournament at the hands of Mozambique, who narrowly edged them 1-0 in Maputo. Namibia is powering up a rare AFCON appearance but will have to go past the dejected Copper Bullets to realise their dream.

Seychelles 1 - 8 Libya

The Mediterranean Knights made lightwork of the Islanders away from home to send a message to Bafana Bafana. Libya will have to beat South Africa in the final group game at home to qualify for the finals. It’s obviously easier said than done.

Liberia 1 - 0 Zimbabwe

The Warriors of Zimbabwe gave President Weah’s nation a lifeline after conceding a late goal that suspended their qualification to matchday 6. The group is as close as they can be with all the four teams on 5, 6, 7 and 8 points. Only two of DR Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Liberia and Zimbabwe will qualify for the 24-team tournament.

Ethiopia 0 - 2 Ghana

Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew grabbed a brace as the Black Stars of Ghana returned to continental football as well as to winning ways. With Sierra Leone still suspended, its almost impossible for Ghana not to qualify right now. They will play first placed Kenya in March 2019.

Gabon 0 - 1 Mali

The Eagles of Mali left Gabon in a precarious position after the narrow defeat as they booked their spot at the finals. Burundi’s 5-2 win over South Sudan mean that they need only a point to qualify when they meet Gabon on matchday 6. Gabon were without Arsenal starman, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Togo 1 - 4 Algeria

Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez bagged a brace as the Desert Foxes booked their own spot after bullying Togo away from home.

Guinea 1 - 1 Ivory Coast

The battle of the West African heavy weights ended in a stalemate, with a point apiece enough to send both through to the finals.

Uganda 1 - 0 Cape Verde

The Cranes of Uganda sealed qualification in the easiest of fashion after beating the Islanders 1-0 at home. The Cranes are still unbeaten and the only team yet to concede a goal so far in this tournament.

Egypt 3 - 2 Tunisia

In a “dead rubber” North African contest were both nations had already sealed qualification from matchday 4, the Pharaohs got their revenge. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah scored the winner in the dying minutes of the match.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Full Preview of Bafana - Super Eagles tie

We are getting to the pinnacle of the AFCON qualifiers and there is still a possibility of seeing your national team being knocked out. Down south, it's a big one: South Africa’s Bafana Bafana take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The two sides are battling it out for the top spot and this game might well be considered a six-pointer as a win for either side will clinch their qualification for Cameroon 2019. Last November, Bafana Bafana broke their duck against Nigeria when they beat the Super Eagles 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau during the team’s first match of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers. It is therefore a game of nothing but revenge from the Super Eagles’ point of view.

That said, both sides have massive talent that can take the game by its horn. On one end Bafana Bafana boast an enterprising attacking talent from the likes of the evergreen Percy Tau, the magnificent Lebo Mothiba who’s been grabbing headlines in France, and also the ever-reliable Itumeleng Khune manning the poles at the back. However, the Nigerian are not to be outdone as they boast amazing talent as well, with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho, although they might feel the setback of the absence of one of their reliable servants, Odion Ighalo who is ruled out with injury.

Most fans will be on the lookout for the crispy partnership between Tau and Mothiba of which many South African supporters will be hoping is on fire on the day in order to cause havoc for the Nigerian defense. Additionally, the return of South Africa’s prodigal son Thulani Serero, who's been given a lifeline by coach Stuart Baxter, might also be a talking point in this game. The danger of Mothiba cannot be easily ignored as the 22-year-old Strasbourg centre-forward has already bagged three goals in his first four caps for Bafana Bafana, quite a start.

From a defensive standpoint, it might be a busy day for Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune especially considering the incentive that have been put on the table for the Super Eagles. To give you context, the Nigerian players have been given a R360,000 incentive for every goal they score against Bafana Bafana. Such an incentive might well set the tone and fire up the Super Eagles to attack Bafana with all they have. If you ask me, this might turn out to be a cracker of a game. We’ve seen in recent times that fixtures pitting these two teams are never goal-shy and this one appears to be no exception.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana resume campaign, North African derby, Zambia must win & more

Okay fine, the 2019 AFCON qualifiers have been fun but almost dragging at the same time. From the get go, we all have been eager to find out who the 24 finalists will be for the June 2019 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Cameroon. As matchday 5 of 6 comes to our screens from Friday the 16th November all through the entire weekend, it’s inevitable that a couple more nations could be confirm their booking for the finals. It obviously goes both ways, many will have their hopes and dreams crushed as well. Here is a pick of the weekend matchups you don’t want to miss.

Egypt vs Tunisia (Friday, 16 November 2018)

Both the Pharaohs and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia already booked early tickets to the 2019 Cameroon finals after seeing off the kingdom of eSwatini and Niger in group J. Typically, this match would be what they call a dead rubber, but not this time, especially not for the North Africans. Tunisia won the bragging rights in the first leg and Mo Salah together with his teammates will surely turn up to restore pride and fight for the elusive top spot in the group.

South Africa vs Nigeria (Saturday, 17 November 2018)

You guessed right, we couldn’t miss mentioning this one. Arguably the most anticipated match of the weekend where everything is at stake in group E. All of Nigeria, South Africa and Libya are still pretty much in the running for only two spots to qualify for the finals. Bafana are yet to concede a goal so far in this tournament and welcome the free-scoring Super Eagles who missed out on the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon. With a point separating the two and a defeat giving more hope to third placed Libya, no one will be planning to lose this one. Boosted by the return of controversial Thulani Serero, Bafana are clearly not entertaining the idea of losing at home and with the qualifiers’ top scorer, Odion Ighalo, among the visitors - they will have to do what it takes to avoid home and away defeats at the hands the Southern African boys.

Morocco vs Cameroon (Saturday, 17 November 2018)

There are matches you just cannot afford to ignore and the above encounter is such a one. Cameroon have already qualified by virtue of being hosts and visit second-placed Lions of the Atlas who still have to ward off convincing interest from third placed Malawi who visit Comoros. When two such highly rated nations meet; blood, sweat and tears are obviously shed. The Dutch Eredivisie’s best player, Hakim Ziyech will be on show in his Moroccan colors to welcome Clarence Seedorf’s Indomitable Lions.

Ethiopia vs Ghana (Sunday, 18 November 2018)

The AFCON 2017 semi-finalists find themselves on the back foot, off the qualifying places with only two matches remaining. The Blacks Stars are in this position as a result of suffering a shock defeat in Kenya and having their third and fourth matches postponed by reason of their opponent, Sierra Leone’s ban by CAF. Their fixtures against Sierra Leone could be reinstated but in the short-term, they will have to beat second placed Ethiopia in Addis Ababa to avoid missing out on the tournament finals for what would be the second time since 1992.

Mozambique vs Zambia (Sunday, 18 November 2018)

Now, the permutations of group K are super interesting. The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations champions, Zambia, are sitting not so pretty on the foot of the table, three points behind first and second placed, Guinea-Bissau and Namibia respectively. The Brave Warriors of Namibia who have appeared only twice in the history of the tournament are so close to a rare third appearance and will obviously mount a stronghold when they welcome first placed Guinea-Bissau on Saturday. Justin Shonga’s Zambia will have just to win all their remaining matches beginning with a tricky tie away at third placed Os Mambas of Mozambique. Of all teams in this group, I kid you not, the Zambian fans are not prepared to sit out an AFCON - the fight is obviously on.

Is South Africa's Ligue 1-based, Lebo Mothiba underrated?

As far as South African football is concerned, Percy Tau has been inarguably the hottest name floating around for quite some time now. The former Mamelodi Sundowns stole the spotlight with his pacey style of play coupled with a solid eye for goal. The 24-year-old has been heralded for his exploits in helping Sundowns to numerous ABSA premiership titles as well as the much coveted CAF Champions League trophy. He eventually got rewarded with a move away to English Premier League side, Brighton & Hove Albion though currently on loan in Belgium. One name that slipped under the radar which has become impossible to ignore is, Lebogang Mothiba.

The 22-year-old forward was absolutely brilliant in South Africa’s recent AFCON qualifier at home against Seychelles. He scored a banger and assisted Percy Tau in a completely dominant 6-0 win by Bafana Bafana. This was just Lebo’s third appearance for the South African national side and scored his third goal for the country. He has been just as good since he moved to France in 2016 from the Senegalese Academy, Diambars. He had also played for Kempton Park and Mamelodi Sundowns in the early stages of his career. Mothiba is currently rocking the RC Strasbourg colors in the French Ligue 1 after being sold by Lille OSC in August 2018, in a deal reported to be €4 million. Lille desperately needed the funds to ease a tough financial situation hence the decision to sell the talented Mothiba to a rival, though the deal was sealed with a buy-back clause inserted into the sale.

Mothiba has been in redhot form since then, scoring 5 goals and assisting one other in 7 appearances for Strasbourg. His latest goal came over the course of the weekend against 2016/17 Ligue 1 champions, AS Monaco. Mothiba doubled Strasbourg’s lead in the second half by neatly lobbying the goalkeeper in an one on one situation to deny Thierry Henry’ and his troops, a debut managerial win. At only 22 years of age, with his ice-cold calmness in front of goal, agility and physique to back him up - I am reminded of South Africa’s living and playing scoring legend, Katlego “Killer” Mphela. Nicknamed killer for obvious reasons in front of goal.

With Tau, Mothiba, Bongani Zungu and many others, the future is looking quite alright for Bafana. As for Lebogang Mothiba, brace yourself to hear more of him in the time to come. This boy is really what I say he is. Take my word for it!

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: What we learned from Matchday 3 & 4

The much anticipated 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the first to have 24 teams participating in the finals is drawing closer. If the events that came with matchday 3 and 4 are anything to go by, the world is poised for a real treat come the 15th of June all through to the 13th of July 2019. With two more match days to go before the 24 finalists are confirmed, we took time to reflect on the just ended matches. Here are the three things we learnt.

Familiar and an unfamiliar face

Five teams have since booked a place in the finals after an impressive run in 4 of the 6 qualifiers. Of the five, The 2017 Champions in Cameroon are flexing, sitting pretty at the top of group B even though they have automatic qualification by virtue of being hosts. Senegal, Egypt and Tunisia - the trio who were part of Africa’s 2018 world cup five, were also among those to book early tickets. Senegal and Tunisia were a bit humble in their approach, getting some modest wins over the likes of South Sudan and Niger. But not Egypt. The Pharaohs continue to be some of the biggest entertainers, humiliating Niger and eSwatini to 6-0, 4-1 respectively in some of the fixtures. Madagascar is one unfamiliar face that booked a finalist spot. The Indian Ocean Islanders will appear in their first ever Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament in their history. They recorded some important wins against Equatorial Guinea and South Sudan in the process, also pulling off a famous 2-2 draw against Senegal at home. What a real boost of confidence for the Malagasy CAF president, Ahmad Ahmad. Niger, eSwatini, Equatorial Guinea and South Sudan were effectively eliminated from the AFCON contest as a result of the above qualified teams.

The South African and Ugandan international goalkeepers are yet to concede a goal in the four qualifiers played so far. The Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper, Khune has been in charge of the goal for Bafana since 2008 even setting a record of second most appearances against for the national side against Seychelles with 90 caps, a few caps shy of record-holder Aaron Mokoena with 107. His ABSA Premiership counterpart, Denis Onyango who plays Mamelodi Sundowns has also been doing a similar job for the Ugandan Cranes. Both sides only need at most 3 points in their remaining fixtures to book spots at the 2019 Cameroon AFCON finals.

Ighalo a man in form, Musa the playmaker

One man who cannot stop scoring is Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo. After getting a hatrick against Liberia in Nigeria, he got two more goals in just a few days in the return fixture to go top of the scoring charts with 6 goals. The Changchun Yatai forward’s form has been really shocking and with resemblance of Jesus’ water into wine stuff, especially after having a barren 2018 world cup campaign. Perhaps Ahmed Musa is the reason why the 29-year-old is singing the blues. Musa provided assists two both of Ighalo’s goals in Liberia, also adding his name on the scoresheet. The 26-year-old is continuing from where he left off at the world cup and has been at the forefront of more mature performances by the Super Eagles since he got the captaincy in the absence of John Obi Mikel. Nigeria’s 4-0 and 3-2 wins over Liberia have seen them take control of group E, with a lucrative chance of booking a finals spot.

Bonus lesson we got is the prospect of exciting final rounds of matches as some groups look to be going down the wire. Zambia, the 2012 AFCON champions, have a lot to do as they currently sit bottom of group K and still to face a determined Namibia and proud Mozambique. Group G currently led by Zimbabwe is my personal favorite with all the teams, DR Congo, Liberia and Congo being knitted close together in terms of points gained. Anything can happen, prepare to be wowed.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: (Weekend Report) Bafana floors Seychelles, Ighalo hatrick & more

Matchday 3 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is well behind us now and it didn’t just depart without leaving some memories that will live forever.

The South African men’s national football team were the biggest entertainers of the weekend, scoring at will and showing off some quick pass attacking football against the Seychelles. It was the visitors who opened the scoring for Bafana in the 23rd minute as Nigel Hoareau unfortunately blasted a wondrous goal into his own net. After that, all hell broke loose for the Pirates. As the rain stopped, it started raining goals and the Southerners took turns scoring an assortment of goals - some from set pieces, with a number for them as a result of successive one touch passing, they call it shoe-shine piano at Mamelodi Sundowns. Tau, who plays from English Premier League side, Brighton on loan in Belgium was amongst the goals but the night belong to Lebo Mothiba. The 22-year-old forward who plays for the French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg assisted strike partner, Tau, for the fourth goal of the match in spectacular fashion after he had thumped in a rocket in the first half. He was always involved in the thick of the action and sure looks like an exciting prospect for Bafana. Stuart Baxter’s men now lie top of group E, above Nigeria and are on course to qualify for Cameroon 2019. Next up, they travel to Seychelles on Tuesday for the return fixture.

In the West, Nigeria were hostile hosts to the Mediterranean Knights of Libya running out as 4-0 winners on the day. Chinese Super League based forward, who was far from being impressive at the 2018 world cup for the Super Eagles, Odion Ighalo won some hearts. The 29-year-old bagged the first hatrick of his international career which sent him top of the scoring charts together with Zimbabwe’s Knowledge Musona who is also on four goals so far in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers tournament. Many Arsenal fans will be delighted to hear that Alex Iwobi continued his impressive club form as he controlled the game, also serving up a delightful assist for Ighalo’s second.

Elsewhere, Zimbabwe stunned DR Congo in Kinshasa as they consolidated their position at the top of group G after a hard fought 2-1 win. Substitute, Bolasie pulled one back for the Leopards late on towards stoppage time but Ronald Pfumbidzayi’s strike coupled with Musona’s moment of brilliance had already done the damage. Zim’s neighbors, Botswana, look like they are effectively out of contention for the 2019 AFCON after suffering a 3-0 defeat in Burkina Faso leaving them rooted at the bottom of group I in which the trio of Mauritania, Angola and Burkina Faso are all on 3 points after 3 matches. The Malagasy people are on the verge of celebrating a historic event as the Madagascar national team moved a step closer to qualify for their maiden AFCON tournament after seeing off Equatorial Guinea, 1 - 0 away from home. Should Barea get a second over Equatorial Guinea in Madagascar on Tuesday and provided Senegal repeat the classy performance that earned them a 3-0 win over South Sudan, the two will effectively secure spots at the 2019 AFCON finals.

Tunisia still boast of a perfect record after beating Niger 1-0 in Tunis, Uganda saw off Lesotho 3-0, Namibia fought themselves back into contention beating Mozambique 2-1 from behind, away from home and Morocco narrowly edged Comoros 1-0.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Shonga becoming Zambia's new hero?

The road to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals, scheduled to take place in Cameroon from the 15th of June - 13 July, continued on Wednesday and throughout Thursday 11th of October 2018. Two matches were to be played on either days, before the Sierra Leone and Ghana fixture got cancelled by CAF as per FIFA’s directive. We made sure you wouldn’t miss the action and have therefore summarised all the thrills and spills below.

Wednesday: Zambia 2 - 1 Guinea Bissau

The Chipolopolo entered this fixture desperately needing all three points after securing just a single point from their first two matches that saw them lie third in their qualifying group, behind Mozambique and their Wednesday opponent, Guinea Bissau. The 2012 AFCON champions did take advantage of the home atmosphere and cruised to a comfortable 2-1 victory. The big FC Metz defender, Stoppila Sunzu put the hosts ahead in the first half after rising above all the Djurtus men and heading from a corner. The rising star, plying his trade for Orlando Pirates in South Africa just had to put his name on the scoresheet once again. Zambia and Guinea Bissau ended the night tied on 4 points together with group leaders Mozambique who play Namibia on Saturday. Come Sunday, Zambia’s resolve to resuscitate their qualifying campaign will again be tested afresh as they travel to Guinea Bissau.

The two East African countries played out to a goalless draw ensuring group F stays wide-open to any takers. All the four teams, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Ethiopia had been sitting on 3 points gained from their first two matches and matchday 3 did not help to separate any of the teams. The goalless draw follows after the Ghana and Sierra Leone fixture was postponed by CAF. Kenya will now welcome Ethiopia on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium to close the two legged contest.

Thursday: Congo 3 -1 Liberia

Liberia would have to quickly forget the 3 -1 loss in Congo if they are to get something in the return fixture on Tuesday, 17th of October. 2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Nigeria prey on group leaders Libya

Things will get heated in the men’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers over the next couple of days. We are spoiled with two legged fixtures (matchday 3 and 4) for all the participants with the first leg coming to our screens as early as Wednesday, 10th of October and the final matches of the second legs finishing one week later. This means that a crucial six points is up for grabs for all teams and also at risk of slipping away. Let’s look at some of the leading narratives leading into the much anticipated fixtures. No better place to start than in the West, where the 2018 FIFA World Cup participant seeks to take control of group E.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had a rough start to their qualifying campaign as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to South Africa at home. Consequently, they find themselves heading into the Libya tie on third place with just 3 points bagged after humiliating lowly ranked Seychelles to a 3-0 thrashing in Victoria on matchday two. Only two teams will secure qualification for the 24-team finals scheduled to be held in Cameroon 2019  and Gernot Rohr’s men will be looking to get two over table topping Libya. The first match will be on Friday in Kaduna City, Nigeria and the return following just two days later on Monday.

At least one victory for the West Africans is fancied by neutrals as the 2012 AFCON champions are looking more fortified with the likes of high flying English Premier League based, Isaac Success returning to the squad and 22-year-old Alex Iwobi who has been one of Arsenal’s marvels under Unai Emery. The “governor” Ahmed Musa who has scored 3 goals in 3 appearances for Saudi Arabian side, Al Nassr will most likely captain the side in the absence of veteran John Obi Mikel who has been “excused” after picking up an injury in the Chinese Super League. Notable players also include young forward, Henry Onyekuru and world cup midfield specialist, Etebo who plays for Stoke City in the English Championship. Things are not looking well for Libya who have had their head coach, Adel Amrouche resigning over claims of unpaid wages and unhappiness amongst players over his methods, perhaps tipping the odds even more in favor of the Super Eagles. But as proven on matchday 2, odds really mean nothing in an AFCON qualifier.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Zaha leads star studded Elephants against CAR

One of the leading narratives leading into the much anticipated fixtures is that of Zaha and his Ivory Coast countrymen.

Wilfried has been recalled to Ibrahim Kamara’s squad perhaps in hope that the pride of Crystal Palace help deliver the goods needed for the 2015 AFCON winners as they meet an unpredictable Central African Republic over two legs. Ivory Coast and CAR are currently tied on three points in group H, behind Guinea who won all their opening two matches of the AFCON 2019 qualifiers. Guinea will be expected to beat the weakest ranked team in the group, Rwanda who are yet to secure a point so far, henceforth the need for the Elephants and the Wild Beast to battle it out for the other spot in next year’s finals.

Ibrahim Kamara will be keen on his troops securing an eighth consecutive Africa Cup of Nations finals qualification dating back to Egypt 2006 and players like Zaha who is yet to score an international goal in a competitive match are believed to have the hunger the Ivorians need for success. The Crystal Palace forward will join hands with other premier league stars in Fulham’s Jean Michel Seri, Tottenham’s Serge Aurier and Eric Bailly of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Lyon’s Maxwell Cornet who scored as his side downed Manchester City 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League is also amongst the forwards and AC Milan’s youngster turned midfield general, Franck Kessie will be among the stars to anchor the middle of the park. Speaking of the midfield, it will by no means be a walk in the park for the Elephants as CAR has been boosted by the Valencia man, Geoffrey Kondogbia who just switched allegiance from France to the central African nation. A win over both legs will secure qualification for Ivory Coast, but will it be so? CAR will also be eyeing the same prize.

Things will get heated in the men’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers over the next couple of days. We are spoiled with two legged fixtures (matchday 3 and 4) for all the participants with the first leg coming to our screens as early as Wednesday, 10th of October and the final matches of the second legs finishing one week later. This means that a crucial six points is up for grabs for all teams and also at risk of slipping away. The six points are perhaps most important to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabon who lie off the qualification places, behind Mali and Burundi in group C.

Last time out, Gabon misfired as they drew 1-1 with Burundi at home. This was after they had lost their opening match to a solid Malian team who currently tops the group. The clash over two legs in a space of four days with lowly ranked South Sudan is a must win for the Panthers of Gabon if they are to appear in next year’s AFCON finals running from the 15th of June to 13th July, with Cameroon being the designated host. They are fears the host nation could be changed amid unrest and infrastructure unpreparedness in the central African nation.

The tie wouldn’t have come at a better time for Gabonese captain and all time record goal scorer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Arsenal forward is currently in sizzling form for the Gunners, with the weekend’s premier league performance against Fulham still fresh in many people’s memories. Auba came on for Unai Emery’s men and scored a brace whilst also assisting Aaron Ramsey for a wonder goal, all in space of twenty minutes. The new Gabonese coach, Daniel Cousin has also called on notable experienced players in Southampton’s Mario Lemina and Cardiff City defender, Bruno Ecuele Manga to sail his side to all six points. As we have seen in times past, there is never an easy match in the AFCON tournament, favorites Gabon will have to be on their A game for the contest taking place firstly on Friday in Libreville and finishing off the following Tuesday in South Sudan.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Sierra Leone suspension postpones Ghana's redemption

Things will get heated in the men’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers over the next couple of days. We are spoiled with two legged fixtures (matchday 3 and 4) for all the participants with the first leg coming to our screens as early as Wednesday, 10th of October and the final matches of the second legs finishing one week later. This means that a crucial six points is up for grabs for all teams and also at risk of slipping away.

Ghana and Sierra Leone were supposed to serve up two of the 48 AFCON Qualifiers to be played over this international break. Both ties have been cancelled by FIFA who are punishing Sierra Leone for not meeting its demands of reinstating the country’s football association officials who were relieved of their duties for alleged wrongdoing. It’s still uncertain on whether the matches will be played at a later date or if that would be the end of the road to Cameroon 2019 for the Leone Stars. What’s apparent is that the Black Stars’ redemption would have to wait.

Despite a spirited performance by the Atletico Madrid midfield maestro, Thomas Partey, Ghana suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Kenya on matchday 2 and has been left with all to do in an open group also featuring Kenya and Ethiopia, will all teams tied on 3 points. Ghanaian coach, Kwesi Appiah had recalled record goal scorer and the South Africa World Cup 2010 star player, Asamaoh Gyan back to the squad to spur the nation to a much needed qualification, especially now that the country’s football has recently been mingled in a fair share of controversies. The suspension of the two matches will perhaps give time for Mr. Appiah to digest his controversial decisions to leave out the Ayew brothers from the squad. Jordan Ayew has been slowly jelling into Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace whereas 28-year-old  Andre Ayew has found life sweeter at Fenerbahce, scoring twice in seven appearances. Maybe its continued punishment for both players’ decision to leave the Ghanaian camp for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Congo, the tournament which they shockingly missed out on reaching the Russia finals after a series of shocking results against Uganda and Egypt.

The nation of Ghana would have to wait for much needed redemption of the footballing aspect of their society.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Three things we learned from Matchday 2

Matchday two of six 2019 AFCON qualifiers fixtures is done and dusted. Yes, as anticipated, we were not robbed of thrills and spills. With 48 of the 54 African countries in action this past weekend, you would bet that millions had a chance to raise their flag and back their heroes. Here is what we picked up from the action, three things we made sure no one would miss.

They are actually no favorites; AFCON is as tough as it gets!

“Our goal is to reach the finals, even if we’re now in a tough group. Along with Burkina Faso, we also face Angola, who are a great football nation. And I also rate Botswana as one of Africa’s better teams, even if we beat them on their own soil. My goal as a coach is to get my team in shape to win as many games as possible and why not qualify for the tournament as well?”

Time and time again, we continue to see proof of why the CAF Africa Cup of Nations is perhaps the most interesting and fiercely contested tournament in the whole world. Take nothing away from the FIFA World Cup or the mighty English Premier League, there is just something unique about the passion and voices of a populace from less known communities being given a chance to be heard on a grand stage. Something about millions of people momentarily forgetting about the tough and seemingly impossible journey of building stronger public institutions, a journey that started in the colonial era dating back to the 1960s, to focus on football.

Here is a static for you, 14 of the 24 matches played over the weekend ended in a stalemate. That is 28 nations holding down their own and refusing to lose. That’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears shed to grind a result. More interestingly, the highly ranked nations who would be easily considered favorites weren’t having it easy. Clarence Seedorf’s debut as Cameroonian coach got off to a scary start as the defending AFCON champions scored a last minute equaliser to draw 1-1 away at Islanders, Comoros to save their blushes.The star studded black stars of Ghana look to continue their downward spiral after losing out 1-0 to Kenya in a famous match whose result sent tongues wagging, everywhere. The 2018 FIFA World Cup boys, Senegal learnt a tough lesson in Antananarivo as they drew 2-2 with lowly ranked Madagascar. Yes, Egypt did have it easy with a 6-0 thrashing of Niger and so did Morocco and Nigeria both winning 3-0 against Malawi and Seychelles, but it should be mentioned that all these three lost their opening matches and were in desperate mode to save their 2019 AFCON hopes heading into the weekend. It's not as easy as it seems.

Do not count anyone out yet, surprises are the order of the day whenever the African nations go to battle for the most coveted prize on the continent.

Home support is actually a thing

Now, home crowds cheering on their mates matters everywhere and it seems to be the key ingredient to all the upsets and “what on earth!” moments we witnessed over the weekend. The victories that headlined the weekend were all recorded on home soil, including some astonishing stalemates. Kenya saw off Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey and his Ghanaian teammates in Nairobi, Mauritania cruised to a 2-0 triumph over the 2013 finalists, Burkina Faso on home turf and so did the other guns who held onto unlikely draws against teams considered to be “favorites.” We are talking about Comoros, Madagascar, Namibia against 2012 AFCON Champions, Zambia and the list goes on and on to the Gambia and Lesotho. The unfortunate incident were at least one person died and 32 others injured in Madagascar as a result of a stampede prior to the Senegal match when supporters rushed to grab seats in an already full stadium further proves the point on how much people invest to back their heroes. You would be perfectly justified for suggesting that home crowds played a key role in deciding the matchday 2 fixtures.

Mauritania in dreamland

Not many people have had about the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the eleventh largest country in Africa in terms of physical size in North West Africa partly bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Sahara Desert ( interesting tourist destination if you ask me). There is another African country called Mauritius in the Indian Ocean which on the contrary happens to be the tiniest. The Les Mourabitones reached an all time high of 81st on the FIFA rankings in August 2017, climbing up a dizzying 23 places. They have not looked back ever since and the hard work seem to be paying off as they keenly look to secure their first ever AFCON finals qualification. Even their gaffer, Corentin Martins speaking to FIFA.com, hardly gave his team a chance heading into the tournament but have now won all their opening two matches, sitting pretty at the top of a group also occupied by Angola, Botswana, and the Stallions of Burkina Faso.

Kenya: Tough times ahead for KFF

The Harambee stars recently released their head coach, Paul Put, three months in his contract over possible challenges in meeting his salary. This came after the government’s decision to increase the tax on gaming revenues which saw SportPesa withdrawing their sponsorship of the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) in January. Now, the country’s two CAF approved stadiums which are currently under renovations might not be ready for the FIFA World Cup and AFCON qualifiers in September as a result of extended politics, short rains, and payment delays.
